IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The charts illustrates the proportionate of unhealthy nutrients sodium, saturated fats, and added sugar consumed in four meals by the people in the USA.
Overall, the proportion of sodium and saturated fats was accounted high in dinner. While the snacks has accounted high in the added sugar. Whereas the breakfast was observed to be the lowest share in all three unhealthy nutrients.
Sodium and saturated fats intake was accounted high in dinner 43% and 37% of daily consumed by the people of USA. The second highest position was occupied by the lunch in sodium and saturated fats intake which was 29% and 26% respectively. However, the breakfast and snacks have contributed same share of 14% in sodium. Additionally, the intake of saturated fats was accounted for 21% in snacks and lowest 16% in breakfast.
In contrast, the snacks was contributed highest proportion of 42% in added sugar and 23% in dinner followed by lunch of 19% and the least amount of added sugar in breakfast of 16%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You identify the main patterns clearly: dinner has the largest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead in added sugar, and you support these points with accurate figures. The overview also notes breakfast’s generally low contribution, although it is not the lowest for sodium because snacks share the same 14% figure. You compare meal categories and cover all three nutrients, so the response addresses the task well. To make the account more fully developed, state the key contrast between the two patterns more precisely—for example, that dinner is the main source of sodium and saturated fat, whereas added sugar is concentrated in snacks. Avoid the slight over-generalisation about breakfast being lowest in all three nutrients.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs that group sodium and saturated fat before contrasting added sugar. This gives the reader a logical route through the data, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “In contrast” help signal comparisons. The organisation is coherent, but some connections feel mechanical or unclear, particularly the repeated “accounted” constructions and the sequence “followed by lunch of 19%,” which makes the comparison harder to follow. For stronger progression, use more direct comparison sentences and ensure each linking phrase accurately reflects the relationship between the figures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “proportion,” “intake,” “contributed,” and “highest,” and the reader can understand the main comparisons. However, the range is limited by repeated wording and several inaccurate word forms or collocations, such as “proportionate of unhealthy nutrients,” “accounted high,” and “the snacks was contributed.” These choices sometimes make the description sound unnatural, even though the intended meaning is usually recoverable. Aim for precise chart language and vary it naturally: describe figures as “accounting for” a share, or say a meal “had” the highest proportion. Check spelling and spacing as well, including “fats, and” and the extra space in “of daily.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex forms, including the contrast introduced by “While” and the sentence beginning “Whereas.” However, these clauses are not consistently controlled: “While the snacks has accounted high…” is not a complete, well-formed contrast, and “Whereas the breakfast was observed…” is also left as a dependent clause. Agreement and sentence structure errors recur, as in “The charts illustrates,” “the snacks was,” and “Sodium and saturated fats intake was.” Articles and plural forms also need attention. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the data, but they reduce accuracy. Build comparisons with complete clauses and check subject–verb agreement in each sentence.
