IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The pie charts compare the average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed by the USA residents and its excessive usage can cause health problems.
Overall, it can seen that dinner recorded the highest proportion in all types of nutrients, while people consumed less during breakfast. It can also be noticed that snacks had the highest proportion for added sugar. Sodium showed no variation for snacks and breakfast.
Looking first at the highest proportion which was sodium, accounted 43% for dinner, while people were consumed 29% sodium in lunch and percentages held steady at 14% in snacks and breakfast. Residents consumption of saturated sugar had 37% proportion in dinner, meanehile 26% and 21% for lunch and snacks and 16% recorded for breakfast.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the chart topic and report several accurate comparisons: dinner has the highest sodium and saturated-fat shares, breakfast and snacks both account for 14% of sodium, and snacks lead for added sugar. However, the response addresses the data only partially. The overview is inaccurate in saying dinner is highest for all nutrients, since snacks—not dinner—have the largest added-sugar share, and breakfast is not the lowest for every nutrient. Most importantly, the final paragraph stops at “Regarding the added suagr,” so the added-sugar figures and comparisons are not reported. The response is also 19 words below the required minimum. Complete the missing comparison and ensure the overview accurately captures the main patterns.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation: an introduction is followed by an overview and a paragraph on sodium and saturated fat, with basic signposting such as “Overall,” “Looking first,” and “Regarding.” However, progression is incomplete because the final paragraph ends after its opening phrase, leaving the discussion unfinished. The overview also groups claims in a way that is difficult to follow, particularly the statement that dinner is highest for all nutrients followed by the separate point about snacks and sugar. Within the data paragraph, sodium and saturated fat are combined without a clear transition between them. Use a complete paragraph for each clear comparison, and make sure each linking phrase introduces information that is actually developed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentages,” “consumed,” and “recorded,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or awkward: “saturated sugar” confuses the nutrient labels, “residents consumption” is an unnatural phrase, and “meanehile” and “suagr” are spelling errors. “Highest proportion which was sodium” is also an imprecise way to introduce the data. Use the chart’s exact terms consistently—“saturated fat” and “added sugar”—and choose natural reporting phrases such as “accounted for” or “made up.” More precise vocabulary would make the comparisons easier to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a few complex structures, including “while” clauses and the overview sentence beginning “Overall,” but control is inconsistent. Errors include the missing auxiliary in “it can seen,” the faulty construction “sodium, accounted 43%,” and the incorrect passive form “people were consumed 29%.” The phrase “Residents consumption … had 37% proportion” also shows problems with possessive structure and sentence formation. These errors sometimes make the relationships between the figures and meals difficult to follow. Practise accurate reporting patterns such as “Dinner accounted for 43%” and “the figure for lunch was 29%.” Aim for complete, well-formed sentences before adding more complex structures.
