IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The chart illustrates the average proportions of three types of nutrients used in four types of meals such as Breakfast,Dinner,Lunch and Snacks, all of which can be unhealthy if its consumed excessively.
Overall, it can be seen at a glance that it demonstrates a comparision of three nutrients consumed in four meals. People consumed a great proportion of Sodium and Saturated fat at Dinner meal and Added sugar in snacks meal. Lowest proportion of all these nutritents were consumed at Breakfast meal and moderate proportion of these nutrients were consumed at Lunch.
Sodium and Saturated fat were consumed nutrients with highest proportions at Dinner meal with 43% and 37%, respectively. Added sugar was consumed 23% at Dinner.
Added Sugar and Saturated fat was similar in proportion consumed at Breakfast with 16% each and sodium at 15

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad pattern that dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead for added sugar, and you include several relevant figures. However, the response only partially covers the chart: it ends before reporting the lunch and snack figures in a systematic way, and the claim that breakfast has the lowest proportion of all three nutrients is inaccurate because snacks have less sodium (14% versus breakfast’s 14%, a tie) and breakfast is not lowest for saturated fat or added sugar. The final sentence is also incomplete, leaving the sodium figure unfinished. The response is 14 words below the required minimum. To develop the summary, report the key contrasts across all four meals and give a clear, accurate overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some useful organisation: an opening sentence is followed by an overview and then a paragraph giving dinner figures. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is limited because the response stops during the breakfast comparison, and there is no complete account of the remaining meal categories. The overview repeats the idea of comparing nutrients rather than efficiently summarising the main patterns, while phrases such as “Overall” and “at a glance” do not compensate for the missing development. The final line, “sodium at 15,” is unfinished and disrupts the flow. Grouping the data into clear comparisons—dinner versus snacks, then breakfast and lunch—would make the organisation more complete and cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “average proportions,” “highest proportions,” and “consumed,” so the topic is generally clear. There is also some attempt to vary wording with “great proportion” and “moderate proportion.” However, several choices are imprecise or repetitive: “used in four types of meals” is less suitable than describing nutrients as percentages “in” meals, and “People consumed a great proportion” is awkward for reporting chart data. “Comparision” and “nutritents” are misspelled, and “Added Sugar” is inconsistently capitalised. These errors do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision. Use standard data-reporting collocations such as “accounted for” or “made up,” and check spelling and consistent terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes some simple and more developed sentence forms, such as the opening sentence with a relative clause and the overview beginning “Overall, it can be seen…”. Meaning is usually understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, and sentence completion remain. For example, “all of which can be unhealthy if its consumed” has an incorrect pronoun form, and “Added Sugar and Saturated fat was similar” needs plural agreement. “at Dinner meal” is missing an article, while the final sentence, “and sodium at 15,” is grammatically incomplete. Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent, as in “Breakfast,Dinner,Lunch.” Aim for complete sentences and check subject–verb agreement and articles; these changes would make the existing range more controlled.
