IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The charts below illustrate the average percentage of three types of unhealthy nutrients (Sodium, Sarurated fat and Added sugar) that are consumed in four types of meals including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.
Overall, it can be observed that the highest percentage of the unhealthy nutrients is consumed in dinner. Moreover, saturated fat is consumed the most in dinner as well, unlike Added sugar, which is consumed at a high rate in snacks.
Regarding Sodium, 43% of it is consumed in the meals, followed by 29% in lunch and 14% in breakfast and snacks. Furthermore, 37% of Saturated fat is consumed in dinner as well, followed by lunch, in which 26% of the total saturated fat is consumed. Snacks carry 21% of Saturated fat and breakfast contains only 16%.
Furthermore, it can be observed that 42% of the Added sugar is consumed in snacks, and 23% of it is consumed in dinner. Breakfast and Lunch have lowest amount of added sugar overall.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main pattern that dinner accounts for the largest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead for added sugar. The figures you report for sodium and saturated fat are accurate, and you include useful comparisons across meals. This meets the task well, with a clear overview and relevant supporting data. However, the overview’s claim that “the highest percentage of the unhealthy nutrients is consumed in dinner” is too broad because added sugar peaks in snacks. Also, the final comparison says breakfast and lunch have the lowest added-sugar amounts but does not give their figures or clearly distinguish which is lower. A more precise overview and fuller coverage of all three categories would strengthen the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs reporting the nutrient figures. The progression from sodium and saturated fat to added sugar is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Regarding Sodium” and “Furthermore” help signal the topic. However, “Furthermore” is used repeatedly and does not always express a meaningful relationship between points, making some cohesion feel mechanical. The overview also groups the nutrients under a general dinner pattern before introducing the important exception for sugar, which slightly weakens the flow. Organising the details more explicitly by the main contrasts—for example, dinner’s high sodium and fat versus snacks’ high sugar—would make the progression more cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “average percentage,” “followed by,” “consumed,” and “total,” and the meaning remains clear. There are some attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “it can be observed,” but several expressions are repetitive or imprecise. “Consumed in the meals” is awkward when describing proportions, and “carry 21%” is not a natural collocation for snacks’ share. The spelling “Sarurated” is also inaccurate, and capitalisation of nutrient names is inconsistent. Aim for concise chart language such as “accounted for,” “made up,” and “the proportion of,” while checking spelling and avoiding repeated use of “consumed.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “unlike Added sugar, which is consumed at a high rate in snacks.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons without difficulty. Some grammatical control is less secure, however. In “the highest percentage of the unhealthy nutrients is consumed,” the plural subject “nutrients” does not agree with “is”; restructuring this as “the highest percentages … are” would resolve the issue. “Breakfast and Lunch have lowest amount” also needs an article and a plural form: “have the lowest amounts.” The sentence “43% of it is consumed in the meals” has an unclear reference for “it.” More consistently accurate agreement, articles, and reference would help move the writing beyond its current level.
