IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The pie charts compare the average proportion of the different nutrients- sodium, saturated fats and added sugars consumed in meals at different times in the USA. The excessive quantity of these nutrients can be unhealthy.

Overall, the intake proportions' of all three nutrients decreased at the time of lunch and dinner whereas it increased in snacking time and remain same during bbreakfast.

Intially, americans consumed 14% of sodium at the time of breakfast and snacks whereas at lunch and dinner it spiked to 29% and 43% respectively. Secondaly, the saturated fats consumption is quite different as it boosts to 16%

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You identify the subject and include a relevant overall statement, but the overview is inaccurate: the figures do not all decrease at lunch and dinner. Sodium and saturated fat peak at dinner, while added sugar is highest in snacks; breakfast and snacks are not consistently the same. The response begins to report sodium accurately (14% at breakfast and snacks, rising to 29% at lunch and 43% at dinner), but the saturated-fat account is cut off and the added-sugar data are not described. As a result, the main features are only minimally covered and the report is incomplete. The response is also 50 words below the required minimum. To improve, give a complete overview and compare the key highs and lows across all three nutrients, supporting these with accurate figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the report: an introduction is followed by an overview and then a detail paragraph, and sequencing words such as “Overall” and “Initially” help signal stages. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph stops partway through the saturated-fat comparison, leaving the reader without a complete account or a concluding comparison. The overview also conflicts with the figures that follow, which weakens the logical connection between sections. Some linking expressions, including “whereas,” are used to connect ideas, but the relationships they signal are not always clear or accurate. Develop the body in a planned order—one comparison covering sodium and saturated fat, then added sugar—and ensure each paragraph completes its point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “nutrients,” “consumed,” and “spiked,” and the topic is generally understandable. There is also an attempt to vary wording with “intake” and “consumption.” However, several choices are awkward or imprecise for describing chart data: “intake proportions’” is incorrectly formed, “at the time of lunch” is wordy, and “boosts to 16%” does not clearly describe the saturated-fat figures. Spelling errors such as “Intially,” “Secondaly,” and “bbreakfast” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Use standard chart language consistently, such as “accounted for,” “rose to,” and “was highest in,” and check spelling and word forms before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple statements and attempts at longer comparative sentences, for example, “whereas at lunch and dinner it spiked to 29% and 43% respectively.” This shows some ability to link clauses, and the main meaning is usually recoverable. However, control is uneven: “the intake proportions’ … decreased … whereas it increased” has a mismatch between the plural subject and pronoun, and “remain same” lacks the appropriate verb form and article. The sentence beginning “Secondaly” is incomplete, ending after “16%,” so its grammatical structure and meaning are unfinished. Aim for complete sentences with consistent subject–verb agreement and tense, and proofread articles and verb forms. For example: “The proportion of sodium was 14% at breakfast and snacks, but rose to 43% at dinner.”
