The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The chart beneat illustates the percentage rate of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar in typical meal consumed in the USA.

An overview apparently shows the percentage of three types of nutrients, present in breakfast, dinner, lunch and snacks.

On the first chart we can observe a percentage of sodium at 43 in breakfast which is high comperatively to 29 per cent in lunch, and 14 percent in snacks and dinner, literally the smallest onces. On the second and third chart we can clearly determind the dinner is at 37 per cent which is higher compared to 23 per cent of added sugar. Added sugar percentage is at 42 per cent in the third chart meanwhile saturate fat is at 21per cent for snacks . we have both 16 percent of saturated fat and added sugar in breakfast. The last one is that content 26 percent of saturated fat on the second chart while on the third chat it deceases to 16 percent for added sugar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the three nutrients and meal categories, and it attempts to compare figures, but the main information is not reported accurately or clearly enough. Most importantly, it says sodium is 43% at breakfast and only 14% at dinner; the chart shows the reverse: dinner is 43% and breakfast is 14%. It also calls 14% the smallest for sodium without distinguishing that breakfast and snacks are tied. Some comparisons, such as dinner’s saturated fat at 37% and added sugar at 23%, are accurate, but the overview merely says the charts show percentages and does not summarise the key patterns. Give a clear overview of the highest and lowest meal categories for each nutrient, then support it with accurate comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is an attempt to move through the charts and compare meal figures, using phrases such as “On the first chart” and “On the second and third chart.” However, the information is difficult to follow because the response is presented as one continuous block and shifts between nutrients and meals without a consistent structure. For example, the sentence beginning “Added sugar percentage is at 42 per cent” then moves to saturated fat in snacks, while the final sentence returns to two different charts. The overview also repeats the task rather than guiding the reader through the main features. Organise the response into a short overview and separate detail paragraphs, grouping comparisons by nutrient or meal, and use clear references to avoid confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “compared to,” “higher,” and “decreases,” so the reader can recognise that it is describing data. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make parts harder to understand, such as “beneat,” “illustates,” “comperatively,” and “determind.” Phrases such as “percentage rate” and “the smallest onces” are also imprecise or unnatural for describing chart values. Use standard terms such as “proportion,” “accounted for,” and “highest/lowest share,” and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish the nutrients and meal categories without relying repeatedly on “chart” and “percentage.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more extended sentences, including a comparison with “which is higher compared to 23 per cent of added sugar.” However, control is inconsistent, and several sentence structures are incomplete or difficult to interpret. The opening says “in typical meal consumed,” where the noun phrase needs a plural form and an appropriate article or determiner. The overview sentence, “An overview apparently shows…,” is awkwardly constructed, and the final sentence beginning “The last one is that content…” lacks a clear grammatical structure. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are also weak, with several ideas joined into long strings. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use shorter, accurately punctuated comparisons.
