IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart depicts the average proportion of three nutrients which is sodium, saturated fat and sugar, that people cosumed in their regular meals in the USA. Perhaps all of this unhealthy if consumed eagerly.
Overall, in the dinner mostly individuals consumed sodium at high level rather than in other nutrients, while the second most consumed nutrient is sugar and their intake mostly in snacks. Saturated fat is used in all three meals as the average percentage, in contrast individuals take their lunch meal in which three of nutrients are moderately involved.
In breakfast, people take 14% of sodium in their meal but the other nutrient has the slightly highr percentage which is 16% and 16% respectively. When we talk about the second meal, lunch, consumers has the sodium intake of 29% and saturated fat 26%. Added sugar has relatively lower percentage in lunch which is 19%.
Dinner has the most cosumed sodium from all the other nutrients 43%, which make it a larger consumed nutrient. Individuals consume 37% saturated fat in their third meal of the day, however they added sugar in their meal just 23%. Snacks, on the other hand contains the 42% of sugar which make it a larger contributer, while other nutrients has relatively lower quantity in snacks contributed 14% sodium and 21% saturated fat.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover all three nutrients and all four meal categories, and most figures are reported accurately. The overview identifies dinner as the main source of sodium and snacks as the main source of added sugar, both supported by the chart. Your comparisons for breakfast, lunch and dinner also include relevant data. However, the overview is not fully precise: “the second most consumed nutrient is sugar” compares nutrient types rather than meal shares, and the claim that saturated fat is used “in all three meals” overlooks snacks. A clearer overview would state that dinner has the highest sodium and saturated-fat shares, while snacks have the highest added-sugar share. This would make the main patterns more consistently clear and avoid over-generalisation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by meal-by-meal details, with breakfast and lunch grouped before dinner and snacks. Linking phrases such as “When we talk about the second meal” and “On the other hand” help signal movement between points. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The overview’s “while the second most consumed nutrient is sugar” does not clearly identify what is being compared, and “in contrast” does not express a clear contrast in that sentence. The repeated “In…” and “meal” framing also makes progression feel somewhat formulaic. Use more direct comparisons between meal categories and ensure pronouns such as “their” have an unmistakable reference.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “average percentage,” “intake,” “relatively lower” and “contributor,” and the reader can generally understand the comparisons. However, word choice and collocation are often imprecise or repetitive. “Consumed eagerly” does not naturally describe excessive nutrient intake, while “larger consumed nutrient” and “sugar … make it a larger contributor” are awkward formulations. “Used” is also not the best verb for describing the proportions of nutrients in meals. There are noticeable spelling errors, including “cosumed” and “highr,” and some repeated general terms such as “meal” and “nutrient.” More accurate chart language and careful proofreading would make the description clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while,” “which” and “however.” Nevertheless, errors occur across sentence structures and agreement, and some sentences are difficult to follow. For example, “Perhaps all of this unhealthy if consumed eagerly” lacks a clear subject and a correctly formed verb; “consumers has the sodium intake” has subject–verb disagreement; and “Snacks … contains” also needs plural agreement. The sentence beginning “Overall” combines several ideas without clear grammatical relationships, while “which make it a larger consumed nutrient” has an unclear reference and faulty agreement. Aim for shorter, complete sentences first, then add subordinate clauses with carefully checked subjects, verbs and punctuation.
