Student answer (Band 5.5)

The presented pie charts illustrate information regarding the average consumption of three different types of nutrients in meals in the USA.

Overall, it can be observed that the highest proportion of sodium is taken by people in dinner, however the amount of added sugar is the least in dinner. In contrast, similar percentage of saturated fat and added sugar are taken in breakfast.

Turnning towards the details, it is evident that in breakfast 14% sodium is taken, which eventually increased to 16% in terms of saturated fat and added sugar in breakfast. Conversely, people of the USA take 29% and 26% sodium, saturated fat in their lunch, while thamount of added sugar decrease drastically to 19%.

Moving further, it is vivid that the highest percentage of sodium is taken by the residents of the USA in their dinner and the share is decined steadily by two times. Although the intake of three nutrients in sodium and added sugar are the least in snacks, it helds highest proportion in case of added sugar which accounts at 42%

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main contrast that dinner has the highest sodium share and that added sugar is lowest there, and you include several relevant figures for breakfast and lunch. However, the overview is incomplete and one statement is inaccurate: added sugar is not least in dinner; it is lowest at breakfast (16%). The final paragraph also says sodium and added sugar are least in snacks, but snack sodium is tied with breakfast at 14%, while snack added sugar is actually the highest at 42%. Saturated fat’s peak in dinner (37%) is not clearly reported. To strengthen the response, give a precise overview of the contrasting peaks—dinner for sodium and saturated fat, snacks for added sugar—and compare the main highs and lows accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and it moves broadly from breakfast to lunch and then dinner and snacks. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Conversely,” and “Moving further” help signal progression. However, some connections are unclear or mechanical. For example, “Although the intake of three nutrients in sodium and added sugar are the least in snacks” is difficult to follow and conflicts with the following point about added sugar. The final sentence also ends without clear punctuation, leaving the comparison unfinished. Organise the details by meal or by nutrient, and use clearer references so each comparison follows logically from the previous one.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “share,” “intake,” and “accounts,” and the reader can generally understand the topic. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “the share is decined steadily by two times,” “it helds highest proportion,” and “taken by people in dinner.” Spelling errors including “Turnning,” “thamount,” and “decined” also reduce control. Some phrases repeat the idea of nutrients being “taken” rather than describing chart percentages directly. Use precise reporting language and check spelling: for example, say a figure “accounts for” a percentage or “rises to” a value, rather than describing nutrients as being taken by people.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple statements and longer sentences with contrast clauses, as in “Although…” and “while…,” showing some variety. Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical relationships remain. In “in breakfast 14% sodium is taken,” the article and preposition pattern are faulty; “in their lunch” also needs a more natural grammatical construction. The sentence beginning “Although the intake…” has an unclear subject and agreement, while “it accounts at 42%” uses an incorrect preposition. Punctuation is also missing at the end. Build comparisons with clear subjects and verbs—for example, “Sodium accounts for 14% of breakfast”—and check agreement, articles, prepositions and sentence endings.
