IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The charts illustrate the average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA, these three types of nutrients might be proved unhealthy if they are consumed in higher amounts.
Overall, dinner has the highest percentages of sodium and saturated fat, added sugar is higher in snacks. While lowest amounts of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar are present in breakfast. However, all of the three nutrients are present in lunch in a moderate amount.
In dinner, 43% of sodium is consumed, 29% of its portion is present in lunch, while the remaing 28% of sodium is divided between breakfast and snacks. Likewise, the percentage of saturated fat in dinner is 37%. Lunch is ranked second in the consumption of saturated fat as it has the second highest rate of 26%. The rest of the proportion of saturated fat is included in snacks and breakfast which are 21% and 16% respectively.
On the other hand, nearly half of the percentage of added sugar is consumed through snacks, which is 42%. Lunch and breakfast have 19% and 16% added sugars respectively. The remaining 23% of added sugar is present in dinner.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main patterns accurately: dinner has the largest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead for added sugar. The figures you report are consistent with the chart, including the 43% sodium share at dinner, 37% saturated fat at dinner, and 42% added sugar in snacks. You also compare meal categories and provide a clear overview. The statement that breakfast has the lowest amount of all three nutrients is not fully accurate: breakfast and snacks tie for the lowest sodium share, at 14%. Also, describing lunch as moderate is broad and could be supported with a more precise comparison. A sharper overview that notes the sodium tie would make the key features more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a clear sequence: an introduction and overview are followed by details on sodium and saturated fat, then added sugar. This makes the information easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Likewise” and “On the other hand” help signal comparisons. The organisation is coherent overall, though some connections feel mechanical, and the overview’s “While” sentence is not smoothly joined to the preceding sentence. The final paragraph also reports figures without drawing out the contrast between snacks and dinner as strongly as it could. To strengthen progression, use more varied comparison structures and ensure each paragraph develops one clear comparison rather than relying mainly on a list of values.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of chart-related vocabulary, including “percentages,” “proportion,” “consumption,” and “remaining,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are attempts at more formal phrasing, but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “might be proved unhealthy” is not idiomatic, and “the rest of the proportion … is included” is awkward. “Amounts” is also less precise than “shares” or “percentages” when describing the chart. The spelling error “remaing” and the phrase “higher amounts” reduce polish, although they do not prevent understanding. Aim for concise, natural reporting language and check spelling and collocations when revising.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “While” and “as,” and most relationships between figures remain understandable. Some grammatical errors and punctuation problems persist. The opening sentence joins two independent clauses with only a comma; use a full stop or a conjunction. In “While lowest amounts … are present in breakfast,” the introductory clause is incomplete as written, and “the percentage … is 37%” shifts awkwardly between singular and plural ideas. The overview also has an unnecessary full stop before “However.” Work on complete clause structure, sentence boundaries, and consistent agreement; these changes would make the response more controlled without sacrificing variety.
