IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts illustrate the average proportions of Sodium, satuareted fats and added sugars in regular meals consumed in the United States, each of which may be unhygenic with excessive consumption.
Overall, most of Sodium and saturated fats were found in dinner meals, while sugars were added in snacks most.
Sodium was most found in dinner meals, at 43%, compared to lunch at 29%. Meanwhile breakfast and snacks were used 14% of sodium.
Saturated fats were used in dinner at 37%, 26% in lunch, followed by 21% in snacks and 16% in breakfast.
42% of sugars were added in snacks, while 23% of them were used in dinner meals. 19% of sugars were consumed through lunch and 16% were taken in breakfast.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main pattern accurately: dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead for added sugar. The figures you report match the chart, and the overview gives the reader a useful summary before the details. However, the response is 122 words, below the required 150, so the report is underdeveloped. In particular, you could make the comparisons more explicit across nutrients—for example, note that breakfast is the lowest or joint-lowest meal for all three, and contrast dinner’s 43% sodium with its 23% added sugar. The accurate coverage and clear overview are strong, but fuller development and meeting the task’s length requirement are needed for a more complete response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing sodium, saturated fat, and sugar. This makes the information easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile,” and “while” help signal relationships. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical, however, because most details are presented in a repeated list-like pattern, with limited comparison between the three charts. The phrase “Sodium was most found” also makes the connection between the measure and the meal less clear. To improve progression, group related comparisons—for instance, explain how dinner leads in two nutrients while snacks lead in the third—and use references such as “this figure” or “the corresponding share” clearly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “average proportions,” “consumed,” “compared to,” and “followed by,” so the meaning is generally clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “Sodium was most found,” “sugars were added in snacks most,” and “were used” do not describe the chart data naturally. There are also spelling errors in “satuareted” and “unhygenic,” and capitalising “Sodium” mid-sentence is unnecessary. Aim for precise reporting verbs and collocations such as “accounted for,” “made up,” and “the share of sodium in dinner.” This would make the vocabulary more accurate and appropriately formal without requiring more complex wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple sentences and some more developed structures, including the opening relative clause (“each of which may be…”) and comparisons introduced by “while” and “compared to.” Most sentences communicate the intended figures, but some grammatical patterns are not controlled consistently. For example, “Sodium was most found in dinner meals” has an awkward passive construction, while “breakfast and snacks were used 14% of sodium” does not form a clear grammatical relationship between the meals and the percentage. The overview’s “sugars were added in snacks most” also has an unclear word order. Practise using structures such as “Dinner accounted for 43% of sodium” and “The figure for snacks was 42%” to improve accuracy and vary sentence forms.
