IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart shows the proportion of different nutrients involved in meals that are consumed on different time of the day. Some of these nutrients might be unhealthy if consumed too much. Through the insights, it is quite clear that sodium is the most consumed nutrient during the dinner time. More than half of sugar consumption is through dinner and snacks.
People start their day with consumption of all three nutrients in really low amount, less than 20%. During the lunch and dinner, sodium is consumed the most among the three nutrients during lunch and dinner with 29% and 43% respectively. Dinner meal is mostly filled with saturated fats and sodium as 43% and 37% proportions respectively. Sugar consumption is at peak during snacking time 42% while others stay low.
Overall, people keep a moderate amount of these nutrients in breakfast and lunch, but at the dinner and snacks time their consumption increases rapidly by more than 20% in each.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify several important patterns, including dinner as the highest meal for sodium and saturated fat, and snacks as the peak for added sugar. The figures you give for sodium at lunch and dinner and sugar in snacks match the chart. However, there are some inaccuracies: “More than half of sugar consumption is through dinner and snacks” is not supported, since those meals total 65%, and the dinner figures for sodium and saturated fat are reversed in “43% and 37%.” The overview also says consumption rises by more than 20% at dinner and snacks, which does not apply consistently to every nutrient. To strengthen the response, report the main contrasts more precisely and distinguish the different patterns for each nutrient.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph describing figures, and a concluding overview. The ideas are generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “while” help signal contrast. However, the progression is not always smooth. The opening overview is brief, while the final paragraph repeats a broad claim about increases without clearly connecting it to the individual nutrient patterns. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “during” in the second paragraph. Organise the body around the main comparisons—for example, dinner’s high sodium and saturated fat versus snacks’ high added sugar—and use clearer references to avoid repeating meal labels.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “consumption,” “peak,” and “moderate amount,” so the chart is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “Through the insights,” although this expression is unnatural in this context. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise: “nutrients involved in meals” and “meals … consumed on different time of the day” do not describe the chart naturally, and “filled with saturated fats and sodium” is informal. Aim for standard data-reporting language such as “the proportion of each nutrient in meals” and “accounted for.” More precise vocabulary would also help distinguish a share from an amount consumed.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the meaning remains clear. For example, the sentence beginning “People start their day…” communicates a comparison, while “Sugar consumption is at peak … while others stay low” attempts a contrast. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “during the dinner, sodium,” a space is missing after the comma, and “During the lunch and dinner, sodium is consumed…” has awkward sentence construction and punctuation. The phrase “on different time of the day” also has errors in number and article use. Practise accurate article and preposition patterns, and check punctuation around clauses. Greater control of these details would make the response more fluent.
