IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie charts illustrate the average proportions in typical meals of three types of nutrients ( sodium, Saturated fat and added sugar) consumed in the USA.

Overall, dinner is the largest proportion both in the sodium and saturated fat, whereas snacks is the highest percentage in added sugar. However, breakfast are the lowest both in the added sugar and saturated fat and snacks and breakfast are fewest in sodium.

In sudium, the percentage of dinner accounted 43%, which is the largest proportion in this chart. Followed by, lunch stood at 29%. Additionally, breakfast and snacks recorded at 14%, which are the lowest percentage in sodium. Furthermore, dinner accounted for 37% in saturated fat. Second highest lunch, is at 26% in Saturated fat. Consequently, Snacks accounted for 21% and breakfast is 16%, it is the fewest percentage in Saturated fat.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main pattern accurately: dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead in added sugar. The overview also notes the low breakfast figures and the shared sodium minimum for breakfast and snacks, and the body includes relevant comparisons such as dinner at 43% sodium and snacks at 42% added sugar. This gives a clear account of the chart’s key features. To make the report more fully developed, state the comparisons across all three nutrients more directly—for example, that dinner is the largest category for two nutrients, while snacks are the largest for the third—and avoid repeating the same ranking in the overview and body. The figures reported are consistent with the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that move from sodium and saturated fat to added sugar. This supports a generally logical progression, and signposts such as “Overall” and “Turning to” help readers follow the shift between topics. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward, as in “Followed by” and “Consequently,” and the first body paragraph combines two nutrients without a smooth transition between them. The overview’s final clause is also difficult to follow because “snacks and breakfast are fewest” is not clearly connected to the preceding comparison. Use complete linking clauses and clearer references to make the relationships between figures more seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of chart-reporting vocabulary, including “proportions,” “accounted for,” “recorded,” and “whereas,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some variation in how you describe the figures, although “percentage” and “accounted” recur, and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “Sudium” is a misspelling of “sodium,” while “fewest percentage” and “largest proportion in this chart” are not idiomatic ways to describe shares. Capitalisation is also inconsistent for nutrient names. Aim for precise collocations such as “the lowest share” and “made up,” and proofread spelling and capital letters. These improvements would make the vocabulary more controlled and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the contrast in “whereas snacks recorded at 42% … whereas dinner is 23%” and the overview sentence beginning “Overall.” However, some errors in agreement, verb patterns, articles, and sentence construction remain. For example, “breakfast are the lowest” should use a singular verb, and “the percentage of dinner accounted 43%” needs a grammatical pattern such as “dinner accounted for 43%.” The fragment “Second highest lunch, is at 26%” also disrupts accuracy, while tense shifts between “recorded,” “is,” and “accounted” are inconsistent. Build complete clauses and check subject–verb agreement and verb forms; this will improve control while retaining structural variety.
