IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie charts compres the average proportions of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar in four categories of meals consumed by USA citizens, and eating too much can bring obesity and disease.

Overall, people consume sodium, saturated fat and added sugar mostly at dinner, it has a large percentage among three other meals. Subsequently, they consume lowest amount of nutrients in the breakfast.

Throughout the charts, people eat more added sugar, sodium and fats in their dinner time. The percentages are higher than other components specailly, sodium which accounted for 43%.

In addition, in lunch item, here they also consume highest level of nutriests specially, sodium contained 29%.

By contrast, in snacks people consume less sodium( 14%) and fat (21%) than added sugar(42%), and it scored the biggest percentage than other nutrients.

Only in breastfast citizens consume less harmful nutrients.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the three nutrients and meal categories, and your overview correctly notes that dinner is generally a major source while breakfast is low. You also report several accurate comparisons, including dinner sodium at 43% and snack added sugar at 42%. However, the overview overgeneralises: dinner is not highest for added sugar, since snacks lead at 42%, and breakfast is not the lowest for every nutrient because snacks have the same sodium share (14%). The lunch statement that it has the highest nutrient levels is also inaccurate. The response is 140 words, below the required 150, and several figures and comparisons are omitted, so the task is only partly covered. Include a clearer overview and compare the main highs and lows accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic, recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing meal categories. Contrast is signalled with “By contrast,” and “In addition,” which helps readers follow some comparisons. However, progression is not consistently clear. The paragraph beginning “Throughout the charts” repeats the overview rather than developing a distinct comparison, and the lunch point is difficult to interpret because it claims the highest levels without specifying which nutrient or comparing the figures accurately. “Only in breastfast” is also an abrupt final point. Organise the details around meaningful patterns—for example, dinner’s high sodium and fat, then snacks’ high sugar—and use references that make each comparison explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportions,” “percentages,” “consume,” and “By contrast,” so the reader can generally understand the topic. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, spelling, or collocation errors make the description less precise: “compres” should be “compare,” “nutriests” is unclear, and “dinner time” is less suitable than “at dinner.” “Components” does not clearly refer to meal categories, while “scored the biggest percentage” is an unnatural way to describe a chart value. Avoid repeating “consume” and “highest level”; use precise terms such as “accounted for,” “share,” and “proportion” to describe the figures. Proofreading spelling would also improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the main message is usually understandable. However, control is inconsistent, with frequent errors in sentence construction and punctuation. In the opening, “The pie charts compres …, and eating too much can bring obesity and disease” joins the chart description and a general health claim awkwardly. The overview sentence “people consume … mostly at dinner, it has a large percentage” is a comma splice; use a full stop or a linking clause. There are also problems with articles and number, as in “in the breakfast” and “in lunch item,” and the final fragment “Only in breastfast citizens consume less harmful nutrients” needs clearer sentence structure. Practise accurate comparisons using complete clauses.
