IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie charts depicts the percentage of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar found in meals consumed by the citizens in the USA.
Overall, dinner accounts for the highest percentage of meals sodium and saturated fat, whereas snacks contain the most sugar. The percentage of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar is the least in breakfast.
The added amount of sodium and saturated fat in dinner is 43% and 37% respectively, in contrast, a lower percentage of sugar is added in dinner (23%). The trend is the opposite for added sugar. Snacks contain the most percentage of sugar (42%) which is drastically different from sodium (14%) and saturated fat (21%).
The percentage of all three nutrients is similar in breakfast. Breakfast contains equal percentages of sugar and saturated fat (16%). The meals in breakfast contain 14% sodium. A similar percentage is shown in meals taken as lunch as well. Added sugar accounts for 19% in lunch, followed by 26% saturated fat and 29% sodium.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main contrasts accurately: dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead for added sugar. The overview also notes breakfast’s generally low figures, and the body supports these points with relevant data, including dinner’s 43% sodium and 37% saturated fat and snacks’ 42% added sugar. This gives the response a clear, well-supported account of the key features. To make the coverage more complete, avoid saying breakfast is the lowest for all three nutrients: its 16% saturated fat and sugar are below lunch and dinner, but snacks have the lowest saturated fat at 21%? Actually breakfast is lower; the overview is broadly correct. More importantly, clarify that breakfast and snacks tie for the lowest sodium at 14%, rather than implying breakfast alone is lowest. A sharper comparison of the full pattern would strengthen the summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into a clear introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs, so the reader can follow the main comparisons without difficulty. The progression from the overall pattern to dinner and snacks, then breakfast and lunch, is logical. Linking expressions such as “whereas,” “in contrast,” and “followed by” help show relationships between figures. Some connections are less precise: “The trend is the opposite for added sugar” refers back to the dinner comparison but could state the contrast more explicitly. The sentence beginning “A similar percentage is shown in meals taken as lunch as well” is also vague about which figure is similar. Use clearer references and transitions to make cohesion more flexible and less dependent on general phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing chart data, including “accounts for,” “in contrast,” “drastically different,” and “followed by.” These choices help communicate comparisons, and the meaning remains clear. However, some phrasing is imprecise or unnatural, such as “meals sodium,” “added amount of sodium,” and “contain the most percentage of sugar.” The repeated use of “percentage” and “meals” also limits flexibility. Choose more natural collocations such as “the proportion of sodium in dinner” and “snacks have the highest share of added sugar.” Check spacing and punctuation around the nutrient list as well. Greater precision and more consistent control of collocation would improve the vocabulary used to report the data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause with “whereas” and a comparison introduced by “in contrast.” Most sentences communicate the intended data clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, however. The opening says “The pie charts depicts,” where the plural subject requires “depict.” In “the highest percentage of meals sodium and saturated fat,” the noun phrase is not grammatically complete; a clearer structure would be “the highest percentages of sodium and saturated fat in meals.” The sentence “The percentage of all three nutrients is similar in breakfast” also has an awkward construction, and the comma splice in “43% and 37% respectively, in contrast” should be corrected with a full stop or conjunction. More accurate agreement and sentence boundaries would build on the range already shown.
