IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie charts illustrate the proportions of three different nutrients taken in Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch and Snacks by people in USA.
Overall, the chart consists of three nutrients (sodium, saturated fat and added sugar). Sodium and Saturated fat mostly eaten in dinner, while added sugar mostly used to mix in snack. However, Breakfast has the least consumption among all others.
Regarding to Sodium, the largest share of percentage is taken by the dinner, approximately 43%. The second most preferred meal to intake Sodium is a lunch, at 29%. However, Breakfast and Snack both have the same amount of Sodium in food, at 14%.
Regarding to Saturated fat, in saturated fat dinner remains with the bigger share of 37%, followed by lunch again at the second most with around 26%. While Breakfast and Snacks both respectively shared 21% and 16%.
Regarding to Added sugar, Snacks consist greater percentages of added sugar, which was around 42%. While in dinner sugar intake is less than a quarter. Breakfast and Lunch both shared 16% and 19% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead for added sugar. The figures for sodium and most other categories are reported correctly, and the response covers all three nutrients with relevant comparisons. However, there are two factual slips: saturated fat in breakfast is 16% and snacks 21%, but these are reversed in your account; also, added sugar at dinner is 23%, rather than simply described as “less than a quarter.” The overview’s claim that breakfast has the least consumption “among all others” is too broad, since breakfast is not the lowest for every nutrient. More precise comparisons and a clearer overview would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for each nutrient. This makes the information easy to locate, and phrases such as “The second most” and “followed by” help show rankings. However, the repeated openings “Regarding to Sodium,” “Regarding to Saturated fat,” and “Regarding to Added sugar” make the progression somewhat mechanical. Some links are also awkward or unclear: “However” does not express a contrast in the breakfast-and-snack sodium sentence, and the final paragraph begins two sentences with “While” without completing a clear contrast. To move further, vary the paragraph openings and connect comparisons more naturally, while keeping the current logical grouping.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of chart vocabulary, including “proportions,” “largest share,” “followed by,” and “respectively,” so the main comparisons are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “intake” and “consist greater percentages,” but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “taken in Breakfast,” “preferred meal to intake Sodium,” and “sugar intake is less than a quarter.” Capitalisation of meal names and nutrient labels is inconsistent, and “mix in snack” does not clearly describe the chart’s measure. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Prefer standard collocations such as “accounted for,” “consumed at,” and “the proportion of added sugar.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple statements and some more complex forms, including “while” clauses and comparative structures, and the overall meaning remains clear. However, some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Sodium and Saturated fat mostly eaten in dinner” is missing a verb, while “Breakfast has the least consumption” uses an awkward construction that also affects clarity. In “While Breakfast and Snacks both respectively shared 21% and 16%,” the clause is incomplete and the placement of “respectively” is problematic. There are also article and preposition issues in phrases such as “in USA” and “in dinner.” Aim to produce complete clauses after linking words and check articles and sentence patterns; this would improve accuracy while preserving your useful range of structures.
