IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie charts illustrate the typical proportions in average meals contained nutrients sodium, saturated fat and added sugar. All of these are harmful when taken in excess quantity.

Overall, dinner contained higher amounts of the nutrients while in the breakfast all three nutrients were present in relatively low quantity. Sodium and saturated fats were present in relatively higher amounts in the dinner while added sugar was in low amounts in the dinner.

Initially, sodium was 43% at the dinner and 29% at the lunch. While the breakfast and snack contained the same amount of sodium which was 14%. The saturated fats were present 37% at dinner, 16% at the breakfast, 26% at the lunch and snacks contained only 21% of the saturated fats.

Snacks contained the huge amount of added sugar which was 42% as compared to all other meals. However, in the breakfast added sugar was in very low quantity of 16%. It was present 19% in the lunch. While the dinner contained 23% of the added sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main contrasts accurately: dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead for added sugar. The figures you report match the chart, including the equal 14% sodium shares at breakfast and snacks and the 42% added sugar in snacks. Your overview also attempts to compare the meals, so the response covers the task well. However, the statement that all three nutrients are relatively low at breakfast is not fully supported: breakfast is low for sodium, but its 16% saturated fat and added sugar shares are not the lowest in every comparison. The overview could be more precise by highlighting the contrasting peak for added sugar and the generally lower breakfast figures without overgeneralising.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate detail on sodium and saturated fat followed by added sugar. This makes the information easy to follow, and comparisons such as dinner versus lunch are placed logically. Some linking is effective, including “Overall” and “However,” but progression is occasionally mechanical. For example, “Initially” does not clearly signal a new comparison, and the sentence beginning “While the breakfast and snack…” is a fragment rather than a complete continuation. Repeated use of “contained” and “was present” also makes the report feel list-like. To strengthen cohesion, group the meal patterns more deliberately and connect related figures within complete sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use enough topic vocabulary to describe the chart, including “proportions,” “nutrients,” and “in excess,” and the reader can understand the comparisons. There is some variation in how you report values, but several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “meals contained nutrients,” “higher amounts … in the dinner,” and “huge amount.” “Relatively low quantity” is repeated and does not always describe the figures precisely. These choices keep the vocabulary adequate but limit flexibility and natural collocation. Aim for concise chart language such as “accounted for,” “share,” and “highest proportion,” while checking that the chosen adjective accurately reflects the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the data remains understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur. “While the breakfast and snack contained the same amount…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, and “It was present 19% in the lunch” has an incomplete grammatical pattern. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent in phrases such as “at the dinner” and “in the breakfast.” The sentence “The saturated fats were present 37% at dinner” needs a clearer structure, for example, “Saturated fat accounted for 37% at dinner.” Continue using varied sentence forms, but check that each clause is complete and that articles and prepositions fit the construction.
