IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The pie charts features the collective percentage of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars consumed in the USA.
All three nutritions are consumed largest in dinner then in lunch, breakfast and then snacks but its not the similar case with sugar as it is most consumed in snacks.
people conmuses the lowest amount of nutritions during the day and increases at night. Sodium and saturated fat have almost the same percentage of consumtion while it differs in snacks and breakfast fats increases upto 7% in snacks rest have 4 to 5 % difference.
However added sugar makes the difference as consumed most in snacks with and then in dinner. Rest is consumed in breakfast and lunch with 3% difference.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main contrast that added sugar is highest in snacks, and you note that dinner is important for sodium and saturated fat. However, the overview is partly inaccurate: sodium and saturated fat peak at dinner, but neither follows a simple decline through lunch, breakfast and snacks. The claim that all three nutrients are largest at dinner is contradicted by added sugar, while “people consume the lowest amount … during the day” is too vague to describe the meal-by-meal figures. Some comparisons are also unclear, including the stated 7% and 4–5% differences. The response is below the required 150 words, which limits the detail available. To improve, give a precise overview and support it with accurate comparisons across all four meals.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic progression from a general statement to comparisons, and “However” signals the contrast in the added-sugar figures. Nevertheless, the response is presented as one block rather than clearly organised paragraphs, and the sequence of ideas is difficult to follow. For example, “All three nutritions are consumed largest in dinner then in lunch, breakfast and then snacks” is followed by a qualification about sugar, but the first claim is not clearly corrected or separated. The final sentences also move between sodium, saturated fat and sugar without a consistent comparison pattern. Use a short overview paragraph followed by a paragraph comparing the meal figures, and connect each comparison explicitly so the reader can track the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “consumed,” “difference” and “most,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, such as “nutritions,” “collective percentage,” “consumtion” and “conmuses.” Phrases such as “increases at night” and “makes the difference” are also imprecise for describing chart data. These errors sometimes make the intended comparison harder to understand. Build a more accurate set of terms for describing proportions and peaks, and check spelling and collocation. For example, refer to “the proportion of added sugar” and say that a nutrient “accounts for” a percentage in a meal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including a contrast introduced by “However,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in agreement and sentence construction appear in “The pie charts features” and “All three nutritions are consumed largest in dinner,” while “Sodium and saturated fat have almost the same percentage of consumtion while it differs…” contains unclear pronoun reference and an incomplete comparison. The final sentence, “Rest is consumed in breakfast and lunch with 3% difference,” also lacks a clear grammatical structure. These problems can make relationships between the figures difficult to follow. Practise accurate comparative forms and complete clauses, and use shorter sentences when a longer structure becomes difficult to control.
