IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The charts illustrate the approximate percentages in daily meals of three types of nuterients which consumed more can be considered unhealthy.

In USA, the average perecentage of sodium consumed by people during the period of dinner time is maximum at 43%. At the second highest timing, it is had during lunch at 29%. At last, the sodium intake is same during breakfast and snacks.

Secondly, saturated fat is highly consumed during the dinner at 37%. While, during lunch it is consumed at second highest, being at 26%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You identify some important figures accurately: dinner has the highest sodium share at 43%, lunch is next at 29%, and breakfast and snacks are equal at 14%; the dinner and lunch saturated-fat figures are also correct. However, the response is very incomplete: it stops before reporting the remaining saturated-fat figures or any of the added-sugar data, and it gives no clear overview comparing the three nutrients. The task requires at least 150 words, but this response contains 87, so it is substantially under length and cannot provide the required coverage. To improve, include an overview of the main contrasts, then report the key figures for all three nutrients and compare their meal patterns.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic sequence: it first discusses sodium and then moves to saturated fat, using “Secondly” to signal the change. This gives the reader some sense of organisation, and the figures within each short section are presented in a generally understandable order. However, there is no introduction that clearly frames the chart, no overview, and no concluding comparison; the response ends abruptly after one detail about saturated fat. The linking phrase “At the second highest timing” is also awkward and does not clearly express the ranking. Organise the report into an introduction, an overview, and detail paragraphs, and use clear links such as “By contrast” or “Meanwhile” to connect comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentages,” “sodium,” “saturated fat,” “consumed,” and “highest,” so the topic is generally clear. There is also an attempt to describe ranking with “second highest.” However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural, such as “during the period of dinner time,” “At the second highest timing,” and “it is had during lunch.” Spelling errors in “nuterients” and “perecentage” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise range for describing charts, using expressions such as “accounted for,” “share,” “proportion,” and “was highest at,” while checking spelling and avoiding repeated use of “consumed.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes mostly simple statements and attempts a more complex opening clause, so there is some variety in sentence construction. The main figures are usually expressed in a way that readers can understand. However, grammatical control is uneven: “which consumed more can be considered unhealthy” lacks a clear subject and has an unclear clause structure, while “it is had during lunch” uses an incorrect passive construction. The fragment beginning “While, during lunch…” is not properly connected to the preceding sentence, and “the average perecentage … is maximum” does not form a natural comparison structure. Practise complete clauses and accurate comparison patterns, for example, “Dinner accounts for the highest share, at 43%, while lunch represents 29%.”
