IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie bellow shows the percentage of sodium, satratd fat and addd sugar in different types of meals like dinner, lunch, snacks, breakfast in the USA these all are unhealthy.

Overall, relatively large amount of sodium and saturated fat is consumed in dinner while snaks contain large amount of added sugar on the other hand, lowest % of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar is consumed in breakfast.

As we focus on dinner sodium and saturated fat consumption is highest about 43% and 37% and added suger is only 23%. In sontrast, break fast contain 14% sodium, 16% saturated fat and about 16% added suger.

Lunch comprises of relatiely same amount of sodium, saturated fat with little difference about 29% and 26% but % of added sugar is relatively less about 19%. At the end snaks nearly half (about 42%) is adddsuger is snaks but in contast the % of sodium and saturated fat is very less abut 14% and 21%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main contrasts accurately: dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead in added sugar. The overview also notes breakfast as the lowest meal for all three nutrients, which is supported by the figures. Your comparisons are generally well selected, and the reported values—such as dinner at 43% sodium and 37% saturated fat, and snacks at 42% added sugar—match the chart. This gives the response a clear, relevant summary of the key features. To strengthen it further, make the overview more precise: breakfast ties with snacks for the lowest sodium share, rather than being uniquely lowest. You could also state the snack figures more cleanly and avoid the unclear phrase “nearly half … is added sugar.”

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs comparing dinner and breakfast, then lunch and snacks. This helps the reader follow the main comparisons, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “At the end” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is not consistently smooth. The final paragraph’s “At the end” is an awkward transition, and “but” and “in contrast” are sometimes used in ways that make relationships less clear. Some information is also compressed into long, loosely connected sentences, particularly the sentence about snacks. Use clearer topic sentences and divide comparisons into shorter, well-punctuated units to make the organisation more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “percentage,” “consumption,” “comprises,” and “relatively,” and the reader can usually identify the nutrients and meal categories being compared. However, the range and control are limited by repeated wording and numerous spelling errors, including “satratd,” “addd,” “snaks,” “suger,” and “sontrast.” These errors make the writing look less precise and occasionally slow understanding. Some phrases are also unnatural or unclear, such as “large amount … is consumed” for chart proportions and “42% is adddsuger is snaks.” Choose accurate, consistent terms such as “share” or “proportion,” and proofread spellings carefully. More precise collocations would make the comparisons clearer and more appropriate for an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer comparative sentences, and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, control is uneven: several sentences have faulty construction or punctuation, for example, “Overall, relatively large amount of sodium and saturated fat is consumed in dinner while snaks contain large amount of added sugar on the other hand…” The sentence needs articles and clearer clause boundaries. In “Lunch comprises of relatiely same amount,” the structure is also incomplete, while “snaks nearly half … is” has an unclear subject and verb relationship. Most sentences would benefit from more reliable article use, sentence boundaries, and parallel phrasing. Practise building accurate comparison patterns, such as “Dinner accounts for the highest proportions of sodium and saturated fat.”
