IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The three pie chart illustrates the average proportion of sodium, saturated fats and added sugar consumed during four typical meals in USA.
Overall, dinner contributes the largest share for sodium and saturated fats while, snacks contribute the most in snacks. In contrast breakfast has the smallest proportion in all nutrients.
In terms of sodium it has a largest propotion in dinner for 43% while, the lowest in snaks accounts for 14%. Also lunch took 29% and breakfast for 14%. Moreover, staurated fats had a biggest proportion in dinner as well for 37% while the lowest proprtion accounts for 16% in breakfast. In additional 26% in lunch while, just 21% in snacks for typical meals consumed in the USA.
In contrast, added sugar took the most proportion in snaks portion for 42% while, lowest accounts for 16% in breakfast same as other two nutrients. However, 23% of added sugar are in dinner. Lastly propotion of 19% lays in lunch portion for typical meals consumed in USA.
In summary, dinner is the principal contributer to sodium and saturated fat. While snacks accounts for most propotion in added sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response identifies the main pattern accurately: dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead for added sugar. It also reports the key figures correctly, including sodium at 43% for dinner and 14% for breakfast and snacks, and added sugar at 42% for snacks. The overview is clear, and the body covers all three nutrients with relevant comparisons. However, the claim that breakfast has the smallest proportion “in all nutrients” is not fully accurate: for sodium, breakfast and snacks are tied at 14%. To strengthen the report further, make this qualification explicit and avoid repeating the overview in the final sentence; use that space to highlight another useful comparison, such as the contrast between dinner’s sodium share and snacks’ added-sugar share.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate discussion of sodium and saturated fat followed by added sugar. This gives the information a generally logical progression, and linking expressions such as “In contrast” and “Moreover” help connect points. The final summary, however, repeats the overview rather than adding a distinct concluding insight. Cohesion is also sometimes mechanical: repeated “while” constructions and transitions such as “In additional” and “Lastly” make the comparisons feel formulaic, while some clauses are joined awkwardly with commas. For a stronger progression, group the two dinner-led nutrients together, then contrast them with added sugar, and use fewer, more precise linking phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “largest share,” “lowest,” and “contributes,” so the meaning is generally understandable. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “proportion” and “portion,” and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “took the most proportion,” “lays in lunch portion,” and “contributer.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “propotion,” “snaks,” and “staurated,” which reduce the accuracy and polish of the report. Aim for a more varied set of precise terms, such as “accounted for,” “represented,” and “share,” and check spelling carefully. More natural collocations would make the comparisons clearer and more fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, but control is inconsistent. Several clauses are incomplete or awkwardly connected, for example, “In terms of sodium it has a largest propotion in dinner for 43% while, the lowest in snaks accounts for 14%.” The opening also has subject–verb disagreement: “The three pie chart illustrates,” and the overview’s “while, snacks contribute” has unnecessary punctuation and an unclear construction. Articles and sentence boundaries are also unreliable, as in “for typical meals consumed in USA.” These errors sometimes make the relationships between figures harder to follow. Practise building complete comparison sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use commas only where they support the sentence structure.
