IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
These pie charts illustrates the proption of unhealthy items such as added sugar, saturated fats and sodium in four meals of the day.
overall, sodium shows the higher percentage in dinner but lowest in snack meal. The percentage of added sugar is highest in snack time.
Sodium and saturated fats have same trend of considerbaly high value of sodium and saturated fats with 43 percent and 37 percent in dinner respectively. The proportion of these two ingridients have almost same trend in brakfast and snack time with slightly differennce in value. The 14 percent for sodium and 16 percent for sat urated fats fat comprised the meal in morning while 29 percent sodium in snack time which is 3 percent highr than saturated fat.
Added sugar value is comparatively higher in snacktime with 42 percent. Its value is almost half than the value od sodium in dinner and equal to the saturated fat in braekfast. So saturated fat and addded sugarhows the constant

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify two important features: dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks have the highest share of added sugar. Several figures are also reported accurately, including 43% sodium and 37% saturated fat at dinner, and 42% added sugar in snacks. However, the account is only partial and includes a significant data mix-up: sodium at lunch is 29%, but you describe this as being “in snack time”; snacks contain 14%. The comparison that added sugar is “almost half” the dinner sodium figure is also imprecise, and the final comparison is unfinished. Include a clearer overview and compare the main highs and lows across all three nutrients to make the summary more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about sodium, saturated fat and added sugar. This gives the reader some sense of the information being discussed. However, progression is uneven: the second paragraph combines several comparisons, and the final sentence stops at “constant,” leaving the last idea incomplete. Some linking and referencing are also unclear, particularly “these two ingredients” and “Its value,” which require the reader to infer the intended comparison. Organise the details into clearer groups—for example, dinner and snack peaks, followed by the lower meal figures—and use complete sentences with explicit references to the nutrient and meal.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “trend” and “respectively,” and the reader can generally identify the nutrients and meals being compared. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spelling errors make parts difficult to understand: “proption,” “considerbaly,” “ingridients” and “addded sugarhows.” Phrases such as “snack time” and “high value” are also imprecise for describing chart data, while “constant” does not clearly express the intended comparison. Aim for accurate, conventional terms such as “share,” “figure” and “accounted for,” and proofread spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer comparisons, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between figures unclear. For example, “These pie charts illustrates” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “The proportion of these two ingridients have” also mismatches the singular subject and verb. The sentence beginning “The 14 percent for sodium…” is difficult to follow because its structure does not clearly connect the figures to the meals. Punctuation is also missing after “respectively,” and the final sentence is incomplete. Practise building accurate comparison sentences with a clear subject, verb and meal reference, then check agreement and sentence endings.
