IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The pie chart illustrates the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy to consume by people.
Firstly, there are three types of pie chart given, Sodium, Saturated fat, and Added sugar. Secondly, it is also mentioned at what time of the day these nutrients are consumed the most by people. Overall, Sodium and Saturated fat is being cconsumed the most at dinner, and added sugar being consumed as a snack with a higher percentage.
Moreover, sodium and saturated fat have almost the same consumption percentage in lunch. Sodium has the same percentage of consumption for snacks and breakfast. Saturated fat is eaten the least in breakfast, and the highest in dinner. Added sugar is most consumed according to the pie chart is for snacks, and the least amount consumed is for breakfast.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main overall pattern: sodium and saturated fat peak at dinner, while added sugar is highest in snacks. You also make relevant comparisons, such as sodium being equal at breakfast and snacks and added sugar being lowest at breakfast. However, the report is incomplete: it gives no figures, and the claim that sodium and saturated fat are “almost the same” at lunch is not sufficiently precise (29% versus 26%). The overview and details need fuller support, including the other meal percentages. The response is also below the required 150 words; the 17 words copied from the task prompt were excluded from the count. Add accurate figures and develop the comparisons to cover the chart more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to specific observations. “Overall” and “Moreover” help signal these stages, and the reader can follow the main points. However, the progression is limited: the second paragraph repeats the idea that dinner and snacks are the highest categories rather than systematically comparing the three nutrients across meals. “Firstly” and “Secondly” introduce points that are not really a sequence, so the linking feels mechanical. Organise the details into clearer comparisons—for example, describe dinner and lunch patterns first, then contrast breakfast and snacks—and use referencing or linking phrases only where they clarify relationships.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentages,” “consumption,” “least,” and “highest,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range is narrow and several phrases are repetitive or awkward, particularly repeated forms of “consumed” and “consumption percentage.” “At what time of the day” is also less suitable for categories that include snacks, which are meal types rather than specific times. The spelling error “cconsumed” is noticeable. Aim for more precise reporting language and vary your descriptions of proportions and rankings. For example, use “accounted for” or “made up” when reporting shares, and “largest proportion” or “smallest share” to describe comparisons.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a few different sentence patterns, including a contrast between the nutrients and a sentence beginning “Although” is not present; most sentences, however, rely on simple structures or fragments. There are recurring problems with agreement and sentence construction. In “Sodium and Saturated fat is being cconsumed,” the plural subject requires “are,” while “and added sugar being consumed” is not a complete parallel clause. The sentence “Added sugar is most consumed according to the pie chart is for snacks” contains competing structures and is difficult to follow. “Saturated fat is eaten the least in breakfast” also has an incorrect preposition within the grammatical pattern. Practise complete, parallel comparisons and use a wider range of accurate sentence forms.
