IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people argue that is better to acknowledge a detrimental, situation such as job you are not satisfied with or lack of money. Others say it is better to try to change such condition. I think that one should keep working hard because a winner was once a failure, and hard work brings success in the long run.
A section of society has a belief that it is better to accept the reality of a situation. It is because they think that working hard is not enough for achieving some goals. Some ambitions require resources, personal connections and money, Which some people do not have. For instance, many students are equally hard working, intelligent and secure same scores in their schools. But not all of them get the opportunity to receive university education, because they can not cover the expenses of university. Similary, in the field of media there are many actors with similar talent and acting skills. But nepotism is favoured and all the actors do not get equal chanceand opportunity. So in these kind of situations it is better to accept the reality.
On the other hand, many people think that working hard can improve your situation. If you set a goal and keep trying for it you can eventually achieve it. Sitting idle and not working for your goals is just a waste of time. For example, there are many people who built their career from scratch and got success through trying. Christiano Ronalo, a famous football player was brought up in a poor family. But he had a vision in mind, and he was able to become what he wanted through continuous effort.
In conclusion, some people have more resources than others, but it does not mean that it is useless to try. Working for your goals can eventually show results if you are determined.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state your position clearly: you argue that people should keep working towards their goals, while acknowledging that unequal resources can limit opportunities. The examples of students unable to afford university and actors facing nepotism support the acceptance viewpoint, and Ronaldo illustrates persistence. This meets the task well, though the two sides are not developed equally: the first paragraph gives several reasons and examples, while the case for trying to improve a situation relies mainly on one individual example. The claim that effort can lead to success would be more convincing with a further explanation or a contrasting example. To strengthen the response, also clarify that accepting a situation may sometimes be practical without meaning that people should stop trying to improve it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction presents the issue and your opinion, separate body paragraphs discuss each view, and the conclusion restates your position. Linking phrases such as “For instance,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the progression. The organisation is coherent, but some connections are mechanical, and the first body paragraph moves quickly from education to the media example without explaining their relationship. References such as “these kind of situations” are not fully clear, and “your situation” shifts from the general discussion to direct address. For stronger progression, make the relationship between examples explicit and use consistent, precise references to the people or circumstances being discussed.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “detrimental,” “resources,” “nepotism,” “vision,” and “continuous effort.” These choices help you discuss both structural barriers and personal determination. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations, such as “secure same scores,” “receive university education,” and “got success.” Spelling and spacing slips, including “Similary,” “chanceand,” and “Ronaldo,” also reduce accuracy. Aim to use common collocations precisely and check spelling carefully. For example, “achieve the same scores,” “gain access to university education,” and “achieve success” would express your ideas more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional phrasing (“If you set a goal and keep trying for it…”) and clauses explaining reasons and examples. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening has a missing subject and awkward punctuation in “argue that is better to acknowledge a detrimental, situation”; articles are also missing in “such as job you are not satisfied with.” Other examples include “same scores in their schools,” “in these kind of situations,” and the tense shift in “a famous football player was brought up… he had a vision… he was able to become.” Review articles, agreement, and sentence punctuation, and keep verb tense consistent when describing past events. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentences easier to read.
