IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people accept being in undervalued positions, however, other individuals seek the opportunity to improve their status. In my opinion, trying to thrive with very little resources available will build resilience in you and give you the chance to acquire essential skills while working, the former might not be able to function properly in his daily tasks. I totally agree with the later notion.

Bad situations such as unsatisfactory jobs or low-income positions are two major probloms for any employee. Suffering to fulfill your daily essential need would lead to your failure in daily tasks. For example, a recent friend of mine landed a position in a company that manufacture chemical products. The job required him to deal with a great deal of toxic formulas, which might affect his health on the long run. However, this man continued to serve their for nearly a decade without changing the field, and he replys that it is only a few kilometers from home and it is the only job I can find.

On the other hand, working in a place with no proper income for the sake of building yourself for a better job is persumbly the right choice, in my opinion. In 2025, the year of my graduation, I was appionted as a research assistant at a research center, voluntirly. I insisted to accept this job for one reason to gain enough research experience to apply for external opportunities or chasing international scholarship. I found this job quite satisfying, because I new I am at the time that I am improving myself and this isn't the end of my career. This rewarding reminder what builds resilience in you and push you further to accept better offers.

In conclusion, many individuals are facing unsatisfactory positions are either surrender to reality and not looking to improve their status while others might accept low salary as a plan to acquire certain skills on their way of finding a rewarding job. I think it is logic to further push yourself to achieve your desired lifestyle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and make your own position clear: you argue that accepting a difficult role can be worthwhile when it builds experience and resilience. The research-assistant example supports this view with a relevant personal illustration, while the chemical-company example shows why someone might remain in an unsatisfactory job. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The first example mainly describes the health risks and the friend’s reasons for staying, but does not fully explain why accepting a bad situation may be preferable to trying to change it. Some claims, such as that limited resources build resilience, would also benefit from clearer explanation. Develop the reasoning behind each view more evenly and connect examples explicitly to the question.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two perspectives, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the discussion, and the examples are placed in relevant paragraphs. At times, however, the links between ideas are unclear or mechanical. The opening sentence combines several points, making the writer’s position harder to follow, and “the former” does not clearly identify which group it refers to. In the final paragraph, the contrast between people who accept their circumstances and those who use a low-paid role to progress could be expressed more precisely. Use clearer referencing and build each paragraph around one main claim followed by explanation and evidence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for the topic, including “undervalued positions,” “research experience,” “external opportunities,” and “resilience.” These choices help communicate the discussion and show attempts to use less common language. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision, including “very little resources,” “persumbly,” “voluntirly,” “replys,” and “logic.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “suffering to fulfill your daily essential need” and “a rewarding reminder.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than more elaborate wording: for example, use “meet essential needs” and “gain valuable experience.” Proofreading spelling and checking word forms would make your meaning more consistently clear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “which” and “because,” and most of the main ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless affect clarity. For example, “a company that manufacture” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “this man continued to serve their” has unclear pronoun reference and an incomplete construction. The opening sentence also joins contrasting ideas with a comma, creating a run-on sentence, and “I insisted to accept” uses an incorrect verb pattern. There are also errors in articles, agreement, and sentence structure in phrases such as “many individuals are facing … are either surrender.” Practise separating long sentences and checking verb forms, agreement, and verb patterns while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
