IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

For a nation, few things are more challenging than accepting a bad situation, although many argue that people should try to improve such situations. In many developed and developing countries, a considerable number of individuals experience unsatisfactory jobs and financial difficulties, as these often arise from various factors, such as unemployment, lack of skills, economic instability, inflation, and limited employment opportunities. Nowadays, many would agree that contemporary society has nearly transcended its traditional boundaries and will soon become boundless in its pursuit of better career opportunities and improved financial conditions. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that people should try to improve their difficult situations rather than simply accept them.

Naturally, improving difficult situations in the form of finding better employment and increasing income is considered more essential for every country, creating inexhaustible opportunities for personal and economic development that are not available from other sources. Moreover, these efforts demonstrate unparalleled benefits for individuals, permeating and enhancing every conceivable sector of society. Since people seek success and fulfillment through improving their circumstances, continuous effort is imperative to elevate modern living standards. If this is adopted by governments and individuals alike, many citizens stand to benefit significantly. Improving employment opportunities in nations such as Singapore and Switzerland, for instance, has emerged as a pivotal model for economic development, delivering enhanced living standards for their people.

On the other hand, there are several issues with the idea of trying to improve every difficult situation that make us consider alternatives. Under certain circumstances, people may choose to accept their situation due to a range of challenges, such as age, poor health, family responsibilities, financial constraints, lack of qualifications, economic recession, and limited opportunities. While career advancement and financial improvement are widely pursued in many parts of the world, many impoverished and developing countries frequently contend with profound economic limitations and deteriorating conditions when striving to achieve these goals. Therefore, the notion of improving every bad situation is not always practical. From economic, social, and personal perspectives, if the goal of individuals is not merely survival but long-term prosperity, they may choose to embrace self-improvement whenever possible.

However, it is the responsibility of individuals to evaluate the nature of their difficult situations and determine whether accepting them will do more harm than good. Thus, it is evident that fostering an interest in improving difficult situations is beneficial.
