IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
In the modern world, with rapid advancement in science and technology, people often believe it is better to accept a bad situation. These problems mostly involve an unsatisfactory job or a lack of money. While these problems are difficult to tackle due to a lack of proper job opportunities and rising inflation, it is better to improve such a situation, as it can seriously hamper one's mental health and confidence.
On the one hand, with the constant development of technology and a massive rise in the use of artificial intelligence, many job opportunities are disappearing. So, looking out for better jobs is easier said than done. The rising cost of basic needs like rent, food, and clothes is difficult to manage due to inflation. Working harder for a promotion and better pay seems like a more realistic idea, irrespective of job satisfaction. For instance, many employees of Meta were laid off due to the advancement of artificial intelligence; in such a situation, accepting the situation feels like the most realistic thing to do.
On the other hand, such a situation can seriously hamper the mental state of the employees. Lack of a job can result in a decline in confidence in the individual. Hence, trying harder to improve such a situation is a more viable solution to this situation. Improving the working conditions, encouraging your colleagues, requesting better pay, and trying harder to improve the condition of your job seem like better solutions to these problems.
To conclude, I would like to say that a bad situation like a shortage of money or low job satisfaction is not one's fault. But not trying to improve the situation and accepting it for what it is certainly is one's fault

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact of AI on job security and the psychological benefits of proactive change. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the argument for 'accepting' a situation is supported by a specific example (Meta layoffs), but the explanation of why one might choose to accept a situation could be more deeply explored. The conclusion is clear, though it could be more effectively linked to the main body arguments. Overall, the task is well-addressed, meeting all requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Hence' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions between sentences within paragraphs are slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally accurate, though the repetition of the word 'situation' throughout the text makes the flow feel a bit repetitive at times. Overall, the structure is sound and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. You have used some topic-specific terms like 'artificial intelligence', 'inflation', and 'viable solution'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a noticeable repetition of the word 'situation' (used seven times). To reach a higher band, you should aim for more variety in your word choices and use more precise collocations. For example, instead of 'bad situation', you could use 'adverse circumstances' or 'challenging professional landscape'. The spelling is accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that communication is never impeded. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'not one's fault' which is slightly informal, and the final sentence is missing a period. You have used complex structures effectively, such as 'While these problems are difficult to tackle due to...', but increasing the variety of these structures would improve the score. Punctuation is generally handled well, and the errors present are infrequent and do not affect the overall clarity of your argument.
