IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people think that an optimal approach to deal with a crisis like not having enough money or job dissatisfaction is to accept the situation, which is contradicted by others. In my opinion people should not give up and try to make any situation better because every problem comes with a solution for which an individual needs to look for.

On one side, a few individuals prefer to deal with problems by accepting them without putting any effort in order to make things favourable. For example, to fulfill the needs of a family, earning member of a house will make compromises on unsatisfied work. Some people accept shortage of money and will try to save as much as possible.

On the other hand, I am inclined to believe that people need to put in effort to face financial crisis or work disappointment instead of giving up. An individual can find ways of earning more money to overcome shortage.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 158 words. Consequently, the development of ideas is significantly underdeveloped. While you have identified both views and stated a position, the arguments are presented in a very cursory manner. To achieve a higher band, you must expand on your points with specific examples, logical explanations, and a more thorough exploration of the implications of each perspective. The current length prevents a full discussion of the topic as required by the task instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into three short paragraphs, which is a logical structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On one side' and 'On the other hand' to signal the shift between viewpoints. However, because the response is so brief, the progression of ideas feels abrupt. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is functional, but the lack of depth makes the overall flow feel mechanical. To improve, ensure that each paragraph contains a clear topic sentence followed by supporting details and a concluding thought.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'unsatisfied work,' 'financial crisis,' and 'work disappointment.' There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'earning member of a house,' which would be more naturally expressed as 'the primary breadwinner.' While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the range of less common or idiomatic expressions required for higher bands. Focus on incorporating more precise academic collocations to enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'every problem comes with a solution for which an individual needs to look for,' where the preposition 'for' is redundant. Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and phrasing. The grammar is generally functional, but to reach a higher band, you should aim for a wider variety of complex structures with greater accuracy and fewer minor errors.
