IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

 

Student answer (Band 8.5)

People have different opinions about how to respond to difficult situations, such as having an unsatisfying job or facing financial problems. While some believe that accepting these circumstances is the most practical approach, others argue that individuals should make every effort to improve their conditions. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe striving for improvement is generally the better option.

On the one hand, accepting an unpleasant situation can sometimes be the most sensible decision. In many cases, people have limited control over their circumstances. For example, during an economic recession, finding a better job may be extremely difficult due to high unemployment rates. Likewise, individuals with family responsibilities or health issues may not be able to take the risks associated with changing careers or starting a business. By accepting reality and focusing on what they can control, people may experience less stress and greater emotional stability. Furthermore, constantly pursuing unrealistic goals can lead to frustration and disappointment.

On the other hand, making an effort to improve one's situation often leads to personal growth and a better quality of life. People who actively seek opportunities, such as learning new skills, pursuing higher education, or searching for better employment, are more likely to achieve long-term success. For instance, many individuals have escaped poverty by acquiring professional qualifications that enabled them to secure higher-paying jobs. Moreover, perseverance and determination are essential qualities that not only help people overcome temporary difficulties but also prepare them for future challenges. Without the willingness to improve, society would make little progress.

In my opinion, although accepting difficult circumstances may be necessary in situations beyond one's control, people should generally strive to improve their lives whenever possible. A balanced approach is the most effective: accepting temporary setbacks while continuing to work towards realistic and achievable goals. This mindset encourages resilience without ignoring the realities of life.

In conclusion, while accepting hardship can provide peace of mind in certain situations, I believe that actively seeking improvement is usually the wiser choice because it offers greater opportunities for personal development and long-term happiness.
