Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which limits the development of ideas. The arguments provided, such as the mention of 'poor people child' working hard, are underdeveloped and lack sufficient detail or logical expansion. While the prompt is addressed, the brevity prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, you must expand your supporting points with specific examples or deeper explanations to meet the length requirement and provide a more comprehensive discussion of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is a basic attempt at using cohesive devices like 'On the one hand', 'However', and 'To conclude'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the logical progression is hindered by the lack of depth in the arguments. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the connection between 'financial problems' and 'accepting a job' is somewhat disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas will help improve the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. You rely on simple terms like 'bad situation', 'good', and 'work hard'. There are also some word-choice errors, such as 'poor people child' instead of 'children from impoverished backgrounds' and 'not enhance' instead of 'does not improve'. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate more precise, academic vocabulary and collocations. For example, instead of 'boost their position', consider using 'advance their career' or 'improve their circumstances'. Expanding your range of synonyms will make your writing more engaging and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'some individual argue'), missing articles, and incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'they not like to work their'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces missing before commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors suggests a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy and proofreading for common errors like subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your score.
