IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
People often face difficult situations in life, such as having a job they dislike or struggling with financial problems. While some believe that accepting these circumstances is the best approach, others argue that people should make an effort to improve their situation. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe that trying to create a better future is the wiser choice.
On the one hand, accepting an unpleasant situation can sometimes be a practical decision. Many people have responsibilities, such as supporting their families or paying off debts, which make it difficult to take risks. For example, leaving a stable job without another source of income may lead to greater financial hardship. In addition, some situations are beyond a person's control. During an economic recession, job opportunities may be limited, so accepting the current situation and waiting for better conditions may be the most sensible option. Furthermore, learning to be content with what one has can reduce stress and improve mental well-being.
On the other hand, many people believe that making an effort to improve one's circumstances is essential for personal growth and long-term success. Individuals who actively search for better employment, learn new skills, or start a small business often increase their chances of achieving financial stability. For instance, a person who attends professional training courses may qualify for a higher-paying job in the future. Moreover, overcoming challenges helps people develop confidence, resilience, and valuable life experience. Without taking action, people may remain trapped in an unsatisfactory situation for many years.
In my opinion, although accepting difficulties may be necessary in certain situations, it should only be a temporary solution. People should continue looking for opportunities to improve their lives instead of giving up. Even small steps, such as gaining new qualifications or saving money, can gradually lead to significant improvements. A positive attitude combined with consistent effort is more likely to produce better outcomes than simply accepting an unhappy situation.
In conclusion, while accepting difficult circumstances can sometimes be the most realistic choice, I believe that people should always strive to improve their situation whenever possible. Taking action not only increases the likelihood of success but also encourages personal development and a more fulfilling life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly discussed both perspectives—the merits of accepting a difficult situation and the benefits of striving for improvement—and provided a clear, consistent personal opinion throughout the essay. Your ideas are well-developed, with relevant examples such as economic recessions and professional training courses. The position is maintained logically from the introduction through to the conclusion, ensuring the reader understands your stance. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the analysis of the 'acceptance' viewpoint by exploring the psychological nuances of resilience versus stagnation, but the current development is already strong and meets the criteria for a high band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', and 'Moreover'. The use of referencing is accurate, and the paragraphing is logical and appropriate for the task. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words; instead, they are integrated naturally into the structure of your arguments, which demonstrates a high level of control over the text's coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. You use collocations effectively, such as 'financial hardship', 'professional training courses', and 'achieving financial stability'. The vocabulary is natural and appropriate for an academic context. While the range is good, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated or less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider breadth of language. However, the current usage is accurate, and there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication. You have successfully avoided repetitive language throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, including conditional sentences and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'While some believe that...', 'Individuals who actively search for...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is excellent. There are no significant grammatical errors that hinder the reader's understanding. To achieve a higher band, you could experiment with a wider variety of advanced grammatical structures, such as inversion or more complex passive constructions, but the current level of accuracy and the mix of sentence forms are already very strong and well-suited for this task.
