IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some people believe that accepting difficult situations, such as having an unsatisfactory job or insufficient income, is the best approach. Others argue that people should make every effort to improve these circumstances. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe that striving for improvement is generally the better option.
On the one hand, accepting an unpleasant situation can sometimes be a practical and realistic choice. Many people have responsibilities such as supporting a family or repaying loans, making it difficult to leave a stable job even if they are unhappy. In addition, opportunities for better employment may not always be available, particularly during economic downturns. Constantly worrying about circumstances that cannot be changed may lead to stress and frustration. Therefore, accepting reality can help individuals maintain emotional stability and focus on what they can control.
On the other hand, making an effort to improve one's situation often leads to greater personal and professional success. People who seek better jobs, develop new skills or start their own businesses are more likely to achieve financial security and job satisfaction. Although change involves risks and requires determination, it also creates opportunities for growth. For example, many successful entrepreneurs began with low-paying jobs but improved their lives through education, hard work and perseverance.
In my opinion, while accepting a difficult situation may be necessary in the short term, people should continue looking for ways to improve their circumstances. A positive attitude combined with continuous learning and persistence can open doors to better opportunities without requiring reckless decisions.
In conclusion, although accepting a bad situation may provide temporary stability, I believe that making reasonable efforts to improve one's job or financial condition is a more beneficial approach in the long run.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You have clearly discussed both perspectives—the pragmatic view of accepting difficult situations for stability and the proactive view of striving for improvement. Your own position is clearly stated in the introduction and consistently maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with relevant examples such as the mention of entrepreneurs and the constraints of economic downturns. The argument is logical and balanced, meeting the requirements for a high band score by providing a clear, well-supported position that directly answers the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a central topic, and ideas are sequenced effectively. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', 'Therefore', and 'In conclusion' to link your points smoothly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints and your own opinion. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow throughout the text, which is characteristic of a high-level response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases such as 'economic downturns', 'emotional stability', 'financial security', and 'perseverance' are used accurately and appropriately in context. While the vocabulary is effective and clear, it occasionally leans towards standard collocations rather than highly sophisticated or idiomatic language. However, the range is more than adequate for the task, and there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication or cause confusion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay displays a good command of grammatical structures. You successfully use a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'Although change involves risks and requires determination, it also creates opportunities for growth.' The punctuation is accurate, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. There is a high level of control over complex structures, and the few minor slips that might occur are non-systematic and do not affect the clarity of your arguments. The grammar is consistent and supports the overall professional tone of the essay.
