IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

While lots of people prefer not changing the conditions of their live, even if they hate them, I agree with those who tell that every person should take risks to improve his life.

On the one hand, many people do nothing with their bad life conditions, because they are afraid to take a risk and leave their comfort zone. They get used to live under financial burden, have a bad job, struggle with overweight and do not believe it is possible to change anything. They also surround themselves with people who share these views, and even if somebody from that company decide to change something, other people tell that it does not make sense, so people are often doomed for this life for many years. For example, while treating the alcohol or drug addiction, on of the primary steps is to break up with previous surroundings, because it has too big influence.

On the other hand, there are lots of people who did not like their work or their friends or anything else in their life, and they were successful in removing these unsatisfactory conditions from their life, even if they had to take a small risk and it was stressful in the beginning, because they thought there are not situations that cannot be changed. For example, lots of entrepreneurs face with misunderstanding in the beginning of their career, but they had a goal, and they could build businesses which ear them millions of dollars. So, I truly agree with these people

In conclusion, I do not believe that the bad situation cannot be changed, and a person's life depends only on himself, thus he should always take risks and change conditions of his life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of comfort zones and the role of environment in personal change. However, the development is somewhat limited; the points could be more thoroughly explored with more specific examples or deeper analysis. For instance, the example regarding addiction is relevant but could be better integrated into the broader context of 'unsatisfactory situations' like jobs or finances. The position is consistent throughout, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5-7.0 range, though it leans towards 6.5 due to the brevity of the supporting arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two views is handled using standard cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, some cohesive links are slightly mechanical or repetitive, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the final sentence of the second paragraph feels a bit abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the use of referencing is generally effective, placing this in the Band 6.5 category.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. There are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'doomed for this life' instead of 'doomed to this life' and 'ear them millions' (likely a typo for 'earn'). While the student attempts to use some less common vocabulary, the control is not always consistent. To improve, the student should focus on more precise academic collocations and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'prefer not changing the conditions of their live' (should be 'lives'), 'tell that every person' (should be 'say'), and 'face with misunderstanding' (should be 'face misunderstanding'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The student demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but the accuracy needs to be improved to reach the Band 7 level.
