IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

 

Student answer (Band 7.5)

For individuals, few priorities are more crucial than dealing with difficult situations in a practical and responsible way. In many developed and developing countries, a substantial amount of money and effort is allocated to employment opportunities and financial development, as this often necessitates various resources and experts, such as government support, modern technology, qualified professionals, and so on. Nowadays, many would agree that contemporary society has become increasingly focused on improving people's quality of life and financial security. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that although accepting an unsatisfactory situation can sometimes be sensible, people should generally try to improve difficult circumstances whenever possible.

Naturally, accepting a bad situation in the form of temporary difficulty is considered more essential for creating indispensable advantages such as reducing stress and helping people remain emotionally stable, which are not always possible when they constantly struggle against circumstances beyond their control. Moreover, acceptance demonstrates significant benefits for almost every conceivable aspect of life, from students to job holders. Since people seek to maintain stability during difficult periods, adopting a realistic attitude is imperative to prevent unnecessary anxiety and make sensible decisions. If this approach is adopted by individuals, many people stand to benefit significantly. For instance, a person facing a temporary shortage of money may accept the situation for a while and carefully manage their expenses instead of making impulsive decisions.

Under certain circumstances, however, people may choose to improve their situation due to a range of challenges, including financial pressure, job dissatisfaction, limited opportunities, and a lack of personal fulfilment. While accepting difficulties is sometimes necessary, remaining in an unsatisfactory situation for a long period can negatively affect people's future prospects. Therefore, the notion of simply accepting every bad situation is not always effective. From economic, social, and personal perspectives, if people recognise that improvement is possible, they should choose to take practical steps, such as developing new skills, seeking better employment, or managing their finances more effectively. For example, an employee who is dissatisfied with a job may undertake additional training and apply for better positions rather than remaining in an unsuitable career indefinitely.

In conclusion, it is the responsibility of individuals to evaluate difficult situations and determine whether acceptance or improvement will do more good than harm. Thus, it is evident that accepting unavoidable circumstances can provide stability, but making reasonable efforts to improve unsatisfactory situations is equally important. In my view, people should accept what they cannot immediately change while actively working to improve circumstances that are within their control.
