IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some individuals assert that a bad experience should be accepted, such as money problems and unsatisfactory job. Nevertheless, there are those who believe that it is better to try and improve such situations. In this essay, I will discuss both views before providing my own opinion.
On the one hand, some people believe that there should be acceptance even if it is a bad situation. This is a very positive mindset to help ease their feelings for a limited amount of time only, considering that they may not be satisfied in their work or may be due to shortage of money, it is not a helpful solution since optimism does not solve the problem. On the other hand, the best way to improve such situations is by trying, such as taking risks, there is no harm in trying, hence it is a way of learning how to be better.
In my opinion, in every bad situation there should be acceptance first so that the mind can think and create solutions to solve a problem. Instead of just accepting what happened, trying to solve the problem is a much wiser decision. Taking risks can lead to better opportunities, some may have negative results, however success can always be achieved by trying.
In conclusion, even though acceptance shows a good mindset, people should not settle for it since there is always a solution to everything and it is better to try and take risk rather than being stuck in a bad situation if acceptance is the only solution to everything.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The essay addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is limited. While you mention 'taking risks' and 'learning how to be better,' these points are not fully extended with concrete examples or deeper analysis. The arguments remain somewhat superficial, particularly in the second paragraph where the explanation of why acceptance is a 'positive mindset' is quickly contradicted without sufficient exploration. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific illustrations or logical consequences for each perspective to ensure the response is fully developed rather than just stated.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression from the introduction to the conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in the argument. However, the flow between sentences within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical. For instance, the transition in the second paragraph between the idea of acceptance and the idea of taking risks feels abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the phrase 'if acceptance is the only solution to everything' in the conclusion, which confuses the final argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on fairly common phrases like 'bad situation,' 'money problems,' and 'good mindset.' There are some attempts at more sophisticated language, such as 'assert' and 'opportunities,' but these are infrequent. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of repeating 'bad situation,' you could use terms like 'adverse circumstances,' 'financial hardship,' or 'professional dissatisfaction' to demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the fluency of the text. For example, 'may be due to shortage of money' is grammatically incomplete, and 'it is a way of learning how to be better' is a comma splice. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your point, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on sentence boundary control and subject-verb agreement will help improve your accuracy.
