IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often believed that the acceptance of bad circumstances, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money is best, whereas others argue that it is better to try and and alter such conditions. In my opinion, we should try and give our best to change these problems.
Although good and bad conditions are a part of our lives sometimes, individuals think that they can't change them. The situations such as employment and financial issues seem difficult when people think them beyond their immediate control. In these cases, people think acceptance is a best solution, as it looks more realistic and it can provide stability and reduce stress. For example, some people feel that changing a job is risky, as sometimes it may cause them to lose the job they already have and they don't even find a new one.
However, i support the other view that we should always try to change difficult circumstances, whether they are financial or employment-related, as it can lead to long-term improvement. Moreover, people can develop themselves by learning new skills, gain qualifications or seek better employment opportunities. In contrast, accepting the problems may prevent the progress and individuals may remain stuck in the same situation for years. For example, one of my cousins faced the employment problem recently. At first, she thought to accept the situation despite her growing enchantment with her job. However, she eventually decided to take action and look for better employment opportunities. Now, she has a job of her own interest and a successful career.
In conclusion, reliance and acceptance of tough situations cause them to remain longer, whereas the hard work with logical thinking to solve them lead to better circumstances and satisfied conditions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the example of the cousin in the third paragraph, which effectively illustrates the benefits of taking action. The introduction clearly states the writer's position. To reach a higher band, the development of the first viewpoint (accepting a bad situation) could be slightly more nuanced, as it currently relies on a single example regarding job security. Overall, the response is focused and maintains a consistent position throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two viewpoints is marked by a clear 'However'. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'For example', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. While the paragraphing is appropriate, some of the linking could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Nevertheless, the logical flow is maintained throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'unsatisfactory', 'financial issues', and 'employment opportunities'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'growing enchantment' (which likely meant 'disenchantment') and 'satisfied conditions'. The range is sufficient to express ideas, but it lacks the more sophisticated, precise, or idiomatic collocations that would characterize a higher band score. Improving the precision of word choice would significantly enhance this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex sentences, such as 'Although good and bad conditions are a part of our lives sometimes, individuals think that they can't change them.' However, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'is a best solution' (should be 'the best solution') and 'the employment problem' (article usage). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error with the lowercase 'i' in the third paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
