Student answer (Band 6.5)

People have different view about different situations in life, such as boring job or not having enough money. some people think it is better to accept these problems, while others belive it is imporatant to try to change them. In my opinion, trying to improvement the sitution is usually the better choice, although accepting things can sometimes help too.

On one hand, some people believe that accepting a bad situation is wise. Life is often unpredictable, and not every problem can be solved. For example, a person may work in a difficult job because there are no other options in their city. In such cases, constantly worrying will not help and may only cause stress. Accepting the situation can bring peace of mind and help a person focus on other important things, like family or health. This view is especially common among older people, who have learned through experience that some things cannot be changed easily.

On the other hand, many people argue that trying to improve a bad situation is more beneficial in the long run. If someone accepts a low salary without taking any action, their financial problems may continue for years. However, if they learn new skills or search for better opportunities, they can gradually improve their life. Progress usually comes from effort, not from silence. Many successful people today started in difficult circumstances but worked hard to change their future.

In conclusion, while accepting a situation can sometimes reduce stress, I believe it is generally better to take action and try to improve things. Without effort, real change rarely happens, and problems may continue for a long time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, such as the discussion on stress reduction versus long-term progress. However, the development is somewhat brief; while the arguments are clear, they could be extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarises the main points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is well-organised with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is logical, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the topic. The flow of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is generally clear, contributing to a coherent overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at more precise language, such as 'unpredictable' and 'circumstances'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor spelling errors like 'belive' and 'imporatant', as well as a grammatical error in 'trying to improvement'. To achieve a higher band, the student should incorporate a wider range of less common lexical items and ensure accurate word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several recurring errors, such as 'People have different view' (missing article/pluralisation) and 'trying to improvement' (incorrect word form). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are occasional slips. The majority of sentences are understandable, but the frequency of minor grammatical errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to subject-verb agreement and word forms would be beneficial.
