IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, people may find themselves in difficult situations, where they have unsatisfactory job or are experiencing financial difficulties. While some argue that accepting a bad situation is a good choice, others, including me, believe that trying and improving such situations is far better than only accepting it.
There main reason why people find it best to accept bad circumstances is fear of society. People who are poor and have unsatisfactory job fear that if they try something new and fail then they would be mocked by people around them. They choose to tolerate and accept the current situation than being embarrassed by society. Another reason is pressure at work from powerful people under who they work. People in an unsatisfactory job may face pressure, threats of losing their jobs, or have restriction on trying to change their position. As a result, they think it is better to accept their situation than trying to improve.
However, I agree with those who believe that it is better to improve bad situations by trying for several reasons. Firstly, people can learn from their current situation about what they exactly need to improve. They can learn new skills or get experience. This can improve their situation and make them more capable for getting better job opportunities. Secondly, they can browse for various jobs which enhance their chances of better opportunities and good salary. Higher salaries can improve an individual's living conditions. For instance, today many people who are not satisfied from current job apply to other multiple companies to get better employment.
In conclusion, although some people argue to accept current bad situations due to fear of society and pressure at work, but I believe that it is better to try to improve bad conditions as it can make them more capable and get them better job opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat basic. For instance, the argument regarding 'fear of society' is a valid point, but it could be expanded with more specific examples of how this manifests in professional settings. The conclusion effectively restates the position, ensuring the stance is maintained throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with more depth rather than just listing reasons.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For example, the sentence 'There main reason' contains a minor error in cohesion/grammar that slightly disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'unsatisfactory job' and 'employment'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat phrases like 'bad situation' and 'improve'. To improve, the student should incorporate more varied synonyms and collocations, such as 'stagnant career' or 'financial instability', to demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'There main reason' (instead of 'The'), 'under who they work' (instead of 'under whom'), and 'not satisfied from current job' (instead of 'with their current job'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement, preposition usage, and ensuring complex sentences are constructed with greater accuracy.
