Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people argue that accepting a bad circumstances like lack of money, unsatisfactory job is okay, however others contend that trying to change the situation in more important. I strongly align with latter sentiment although we will be discussing both the views of bad conditions and improving it.

Many people tend to accept the difficult situation they are in. It takes a lot of effort to change such position. People give up as they have to endure high stress and have to work hard to change the situation. For instance, an individuals have to get skilled to improve their competitiveness in the market which might have attractive salary. However, many people are not willing to go through such hardship as people involunteerily seek comfort and easiness in life.

On the other hand, many individuals push themselves to get better at what they do. These individuals constantly learn new skills and use their knowledge to improve themselves. As a result, in long run they are able to transcend from bad situation to improved and better condition. For example, there are many startup companies build by individuals who quit their unsatisfactory job and were able to amaze the world with their innovation.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that individuals should not accept their bad circumstance and always work towards improving it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal position. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the arguments. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped; for instance, the explanation of why people accept bad situations could be expanded with more nuanced reasoning. The conclusion is also quite brief. To reach a higher band, you must expand your supporting points with more detailed examples and ensure the essay meets the length requirement to allow for a full development of your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'For instance', and 'As a result' are used to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression could be smoother if the sentences were connected with a wider variety of cohesive markers. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'transcend' and 'competitiveness'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'bad circumstances' (should be 'bad circumstances' or 'a bad circumstance'), 'involunteerily' (which is not a standard word), and 'easiness' (where 'ease' would be more natural). The range is sufficient for the task but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the quality of the writing. Examples include 'an individuals have to' (subject-verb agreement error), 'might have attractive salary' (missing article), and 'startup companies build by' (incorrect passive voice construction). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of error-free complex sentences will help improve this score.
