IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Several individuals prefer to accept difficult situation like low-paying jobs or financial struggles, while other thinks it is better to take active steps to improve them. In my opinion, while accepting reality can bring peace of mind, taking action is necessary to build a better life.
On the other hand, accepting a bad situation can prevent unnecessary stress and anxiety. Constantly fighting against circumstances that are hard to change can make people feel frustrated and hopeless. For example, if some one loses their job during a economic crisis accepting the reality helps them stay calm, avoid panic attacks and adapt to living on a smaller budget. Acceptance allows people to move on and work hard for a better future.
On the other hand , taking action to improve a difficult situation is essential for progress and personal growth. If people simply accept low salaries, they remain stuck forever. By learning new skills, searching for better jobs and starting a side business can gradually decrease financial hardship. It leads to a better lifestyle and a healthy mental health. In our society, most successful people are those who refused to accept poor conditions and worked hard to change them.
In my opinion, Acceptance is necessary to maintain emotional stability and prevent panic during a crisis, but we should also work hard to make our life better.
In conclusion, although accepting a bad situation helps preserve mental calmness but working to fix it leads to long term success. Therefore, I believe people should accept their reality temporarily but work hard to improve their life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of emotional stability versus personal growth. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'accepting reality' could be more deeply explored with more nuanced examples beyond just job loss. The conclusion effectively synthesizes the two views, but the overall development remains at a functional level rather than a fully extended one. The position is consistent throughout the essay, meeting the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand' and 'In conclusion' are used, though there is a slight error in using 'On the other hand' for both body paragraphs, which is repetitive and logically confusing since the second paragraph is not contrasting with the first in the way the transition implies. Referencing is generally clear, and the flow of ideas is easy to follow despite the minor mechanical issues with transitions.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'financial hardship', 'emotional stability', and 'economic crisis'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional inaccuracies, such as 'a economic crisis' (should be 'an') and 'healthy mental health' (which is slightly redundant). The lexical choices are generally functional but lack the sophistication or precision required for a higher band score. The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without difficulty.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'other thinks' (should be 'others think'), 'if some one' (should be 'someone'), and the incorrect use of 'but' in the final sentence ('although... but' is a double conjunction error). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there is an unnecessary space before the comma in 'On the other hand ,'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the writer demonstrates a reasonable level of control over basic sentence construction.
