IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

 

Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is often argued that people should accept difficult circumstances, such as an unsatisfying job or financial problems, while others believe that individuals should make every effort to improve their situation. Although accepting an unpleasant situation can sometimes be practical, I believe that people should generally take action to create better circumstances for themselves.

On the one hand, accepting a difficult situation may be the most sensible option in some cases. Some problems are beyond an individual's control, and constantly trying to change them can lead to stress and disappointment. For example, a person who has financial difficulties may need to accept their current situation temporarily if they have limited employment opportunities or significant family responsibilities. Similarly, employees may choose to remain in an unsatisfactory job because it provides a stable income, health insurance or other important benefits. In such circumstances, accepting reality can help people maintain stability rather than making risky decisions.

On the other hand, there are strong reasons why people should try to improve difficult situations whenever possible. Taking action can lead to personal growth, greater confidence and better opportunities in the future. For instance, someone who dislikes their job could learn new skills, gain additional qualifications or search for employment in another company. Likewise, a person experiencing financial difficulties could reduce unnecessary expenses, acquire new professional skills or find an additional source of income. Although these changes may require considerable effort and patience, they can significantly improve a person's quality of life in the long term.

In my opinion, people should not simply accept an unsatisfactory situation if they have realistic opportunities to change it. However, acceptance can be useful as a temporary strategy when circumstances cannot be changed immediately. The most effective approach is therefore to recognise one's current limitations while actively looking for practical ways to improve them.

In conclusion, while accepting difficult circumstances can sometimes provide stability and reduce unnecessary stress, I believe that making reasonable efforts to improve one's situation is generally more beneficial. A willingness to adapt and take action can help people achieve a more satisfying and secure future.
