IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

While some believe that accepting bad situations, such as poor financial status, is the best approach to deal with life challenges, some others advocate for fighting for better life conditions. This essay will explore both perspectives before presenting a personal viewpoint that seeking solutions should be the primary approach.

On the one hand, proponents of adapting with tough conditions by embracing them often argue that such an approach is the most effective in dealing with life challenges, since it instills a sense of satisfaction and acceptance of a reality that in many cases might be unchangable. For instance, a mother who gives birth to a child with major birth defects might prefer to accept her child's fate intead of chasing an unrealistic hope, specially that majority of the congenital issues are uncurable and siginificantly decrease life expectancy.

On the other hand, many others argue that fighting for better life conditions is a fundemental value that does not only reflect positively on the individual's life, but also benefit the society as whole. Since the citizens are the building unit of the soicety, personal improvement is the first step towards societal progress. Moreover, hundreds or maybe thousands of stories for people who lived in an extremely harsh situations such as poverty or a persisitng sickness who eventually overcame these challenges and became notibaly successful, these stories should be an inspiration for current and future generation who will be the cornerstone of tommorow's success.

In conclusion, although acceptence might be beneficial in certain conditions where being hopeful is unrealistic, attempting to improve one's situation and superpass challenges is an extremely pivotal trait to be instilled in our societies in order to shape individuals and socities alike.
