IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Task 2

While some people think that accepting a bad situation is the best, others believe that trying to enhance the situation is better. Making situations suit our taste or reach our standards is always better than adapting to them.

Some organizations are stagnant and does not appreciate their workers but then, with the addition of high unemployment rate, this leaves the staff with no motivation to fight for a better opportunity. They tend to stay while managing whatever the facility throws at them because they are brainwashed with the saying "it is not greener outside". Also, it is evident that unsatisfied work environment reduces work output and on the same hand, disables the family unit because there is no enough income to take home. Take for instance,

the company named Bediro is known for its poor renumeration which reduced the work input and further dropped its output. As of yesterday, news had it that the company is shutting down and an employee committed suicide because he couldn't cater for his family.

On the other hand, it is the responsibility of both the employees and the employer to remedy a bad situation. This could be done in a lot of ways which includes: good working condition, adequate incentives, opportunities for growth or seeking employment elsewhere. If discovered after quality assurance that the company is degrading and the company has no plans of resurrecting to a better state, the employee should seize the opportunity to enrich their skills while seeking for better jobs. Few years back for an example, a woman in cairo left her job which was not providing her with better opportunities for growth, to a job even closer to her residence which did not only give her revenue for better family bonding but also opportunity to grow in her field.

In my opinion, I will always choose making my situation better over managing a terrible situation because it would limit my level of job satisfaction, family happiness or even growth and income. I advice that one takes up every opportunity to change his state or make it even better because work place dissatisfaction destroys everything about life including increasing the chances of developing depression.

In conclusion, strengthening one's situation is paramount to nurturing the thought of accepting a terrible situation so as to increase the quality of life.

However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and sentences like 'Take for instance, the company named Bediro' disrupt the flow due to awkward punctuation and paragraph separation. Overall, the organizational structure is clear and coherent, comfortably aligning with a Band 6.5 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task and attempts less common lexical items such as 'remuneration', 'stagnant', 'incentives', and 'dissatisfaction'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text. For instance, the phrase 'enhancing the situation' is less natural than 'improving the situation', 'renumeration' contains a spelling error, and 'no enough income' should be 'not enough income'.
