Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this contemporary era, where some says that we should accept bad situations like unsatifactory job or shortage of money, some individuals conflict that such situations should be improved. I would say that these situations must be avoided and needs to be improved if possible because public deserves to live a life without the tensions of such problems.

First of all, those who say that individuals should accept bad situations such as unsatisfactory jobs and shortage of money has a point because sometimes, it is the only way to survive in this cruel world. For instance, if a person do not have good opportunities like a good job where he can have mental peace and better pay, they should continue with what they have, so they can atleast survive in their daily lives. As a result they can wait for a better opportunity and can still continue to live. Therefore, it is not a bad thing to accept such situations.

However, the other opinion, people should try to improve such kind of situations because it is quite hard to survive in this cruel world where mental peace and money is everything. For example, if a person is happy with his job and have good money, then that individual can make his lifestyle better and will be able to continue his life with much more efficency. As a result such individuals can think on other aspects of their life which were grounded by the burden of unnecessary stuff. Therefore, people should try and make improvements in these situations.

In my opinion, people who argue that such situations needs to be improved are correct because by improving they can actually focus on their personal life, their personality, and can have mental peace which is quite important for all this.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both views required by the prompt and presents a clear personal opinion throughout the essay. In the first body paragraph, the student discusses why accepting bad situations might be necessary for survival, citing examples such as waiting for better job opportunities. The second body paragraph explores the opposing view, arguing that attempting to improve unsatisfactory conditions leads to better efficiency and lifestyle. Finally, the conclusion clearly restates the writer's stance. While the ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, some arguments border on slight over-generalisation, such as stating that 'money is everything', which prevents the task response from achieving the highest band. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are appropriately covered, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs representing different views, and a concluding paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to link sentences and arguments, as seen with transitional phrases like 'First of all', 'However', and 'For instance'. However, some referencing is slightly unclear or mechanical, and paragraph transitions could be smoother. For example, the logical progression between sentences occasionally feels repetitive. Despite these flaws, the relationship between ideas is easy to follow throughout, supporting a Band 6.0 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas clearly. The writer attempts some less common items and topic-related vocabulary, such as 'contemporary era', 'mental peace', and 'efficiency'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'unsatifactory' instead of unsatisfactory, 'conflict' instead of contend or argue, and grammatical collocation issues like 'if a person do not have' or 'have good money'. Furthermore, word forms are sometimes misused, as seen with 'efficency'. These lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication, placing the response firmly in Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors in subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'some says', 'if a person do not have', 'situations needs', and 'have good money, then that individual can make... and will be able'. Punctuation and article usage also show occasional lapses. While these errors occur frequently throughout the text, they rarely impede overall communication, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 5.5 performance.
