IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Sometimes a bad situation makes you strong and confident. They make you endure many unmanageable situations, and other kinds of situations feel normal and with cold min reactance. When some people face a bad situation for the first time, they panic and also feel nervous; they don't have any idea how to react in that situation. So, I believe that bad situations come to make you strong and cold-minded. Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or a shortage of money. In my opinion, bad situations are not better for your health. Every time your mind is thinking about a bad situation that is going to happen, how can you live peacefully?
Your mind is always thinking about bad situations; there is no kind of peace in your mind. Sometimes a shortage of money also hurts you very badly, and an unsatisfactory job does too, but in my opinion, we need balance in both things. Some kind of people argue that it is better to try such a situation. Yes, absolutely; it is the way to figure out the main mistake that pulls you into a bad situation, solve it, and get it out of your life. I believed bad situations never came into a whole life, but we give them a place to live with us by not making efforts to solve that kind of situation and live a life peacefully and with your own decisions, which make you feel better and grateful.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on how to handle difficult situations and presents a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the essay frequently repeats the notion that bad situations make you strong or that peace of mind is affected, without deeply exploring the broader implications of accepting versus trying to improve adverse conditions. The writer's position is clear throughout, but the arguments lack sufficient extension and support to reach a higher band. Consequently, the task response aligns best with a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text demonstrates some organisation, but the overall progression of ideas is hindered by abrupt transitions and poor paragraphing. The essay contains only two long paragraphs that mix distinct concepts, such as personal resilience, the consequences of a shortage of money, and the benefits of solving problems. Cohesive devices are sometimes inadequate or inaccurate, as seen in phrases like 'Some kind of people argue' and 'I believed bad situations never came into a whole life'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it harder for the reader to follow the logical flow, which corresponds to Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and often repetitive. While the writer attempts some less common phrases, such as 'cold min reactance' and 'cold-minded', these expressions are unnatural or inaccurate in standard English. Words and phrases like 'bad situation' and 'think about' are reused extensively. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'try such a situation' instead of 'try to improve such a situation', which can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, placing this aspect of the writing at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence forms. However, attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to grammar and punctuation errors that cause confusion. Examples include 'They make you endure many unmanageable situations, and other kinds of situations feel normal and with cold min reactance' and 'I believed bad situations never came into a whole life, but we give them a place to live with us by not making efforts...' These frequent structural errors impede comprehension at times, justifying a band score of 5.0.
