IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people argue that accepting the distressful circumstance is best option while other people think that it is good to make an effort to improve the bad position you are in . This essay will give both viewpoints, and in my opinion improving your current bad state is generally a good option.

On one hand, when an individual is having a worst condition in both terms of finances and mental stress, he sometimes find it difficult to move on from the position he is currently in. The best way a person finds in such situation is to accept the fact that life is falling apart, rather than trying for something better. Firstly, not every problem can be solved immediately and it can lead to stressful conditions. For example, if you are stuck in a job which is deteriorating your mental health but at the same time you have a huge financial pressure at your end then you have to admit the scenario, that this case could not be solved very early. Secondly, many people do not have many choices in their lives nor they have support from their family so they eventually have to accept it.

On the other hand, many people have optimistic approach in their lives even if their whole life is falling apart they always try to improve difficult situations rather than accepting it, for better opportunities. For instance, a person who is doing struggle in his work and is having many problems can develop new skills and technical expertise to make his current job work. Similarly, someone who is going through a tough financial condition can limit his spending's so that he can save more and can get through the situation. In addition, taking an action towards their problem can give people a sense of achievement and they become more positive in life.

In conclusion, accepting a difficult situation is beneficial to some extent as it can prevent you from mental distress at the moment but in my opinion it is essential to cope up with the bad circumstances and develop a positive attitude for better and vast opportunities.

Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'For instance', 'Firstly', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively. However, referencing and cohesive transitions are at times a little mechanical rather than wholly natural, placing this response comfortably in the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and collocation phrases such as 'mental stress', 'technical expertise', and 'optimistic approach'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'distressful circumstance' instead of 'distressing circumstance', 'worst condition' instead of 'worse condition', 'bad position you are in', and 'doing struggle' instead of 'struggling'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer attempts complex structures using subordinate clauses ('even if their whole life is falling apart they always try to improve...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('is best option', 'have optimistic approach'), preposition issues ('at your end', 'towards their problem'), and slight subject-verb agreement or pronoun inconsistencies ('nor they have support'). Despite these recurring errors, they rarely impede communication, aligning the grammar with the Band 6 descriptor.
