IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The majority of people are living with the mindset of never give up on any situation. Few individuals argue that it is best to live in a detrimental circumstance, such as a lack of job satisfaction and financial trouble. This essay will articulate both the side along with my own view.

To commence with the first view, sometimes people give up on their lives due to down fall in their lives. To be more precise, there are some people who do not someone whom they can be relied on. There are many circumstances where individuals have no one for supporting them and eventually they have to accept situation and move on because that is best option for them. For instance, a person who is living alone in new city often faces financial issues however that person does not have anyone where that person seek for help therefore adapting a situation will become the last option.

On the other hand, many people believe that individuals should actively try to improve their circumstances. to elaborate further, accepting a bad situation permanently may prevent people from achieving their goals and improving their quality of life. People can take practical steps, such as learning new skills, finding another job, or managing their money more carefully. For example, an employee who is unhappy with their salary could study a new skill in their free time and later apply for a better-paying position.

In my opinion, it is better to try to improve a bad situation because taking action can create better opportunities and lead to a happier life.

To recapitulate, sometimes it is necessary to accept the condition. However, I firmly believe people should do some extra efforts so that their life can be better.

Logical progression is present, but occasional clunky transitions prevent the essay from achieving a higher band score.

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'detrimental circumstance', 'job satisfaction', and 'financial trouble'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text. For example, the student writes 'never give up on any situation' instead of accepting a situation, 'down fall in their lives', 'someone whom they can be relied on' instead of someone they can rely on, and 'adapting a situation' instead of adapting to a situation. While these lexical errors do not impede overall communication, they restrict the score to Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with complex structures like 'Although' or relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the response.
