Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially. While the student acknowledges both views and presents a personal opinion in the conclusion, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the introduction relies heavily on a lengthy, convoluted paraphrase of the prompt rather than a concise overview. In the body paragraphs, the discussion of the two viewpoints is overly generalized and lacks sufficient explanation or specific examples. The arguments presented for Group A and Group B are introduced superficially, such as mentioning 'bear a loss to save an relationship' or 'improve their source of income', but these points are not fully extended. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to explore both perspectives with greater depth and provide well-supported explanations for each side before stating a clearer position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organization with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but the text lacks a clear overall progression. The use of cohesive devices is frequently mechanical, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as structuring the entire body around rigid self-invented categories ('Group-A, and Group-B') rather than natural argumentative flow. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak. For example, the transition from the introductory outline to the body paragraphs feels disjointed, with phrases like 'We will discuss both people points of view in detail in upcomming paragraph.' To improve, the writer should employ a wider range of standard cohesive markers more naturally and ensure that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one without relying on artificial group labels.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include spelling errors like 'reagrding' and 'upcomming', as well as awkward collocations and word forms such as 'perform more efficient' instead of 'perform more efficiently', and 'rum bread and butter' instead of 'earn a living' or 'earn their bread and butter'. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary range, incorporate less common lexical items accurately, and pay closer attention to word forms and correct spellings.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('most of the people believes', 'their are two groups', 'process cannot be stop'), article usage, and punctuation. Attempts at complex structures often result in grammatical failure, such as run-on sentences and confusing clauses in the introduction and conclusion. Punctuation errors, such as the incorrect semicolon usage in 'In conclusion; i support', further detract from accuracy. To progress, the writer needs to develop a better command of basic grammatical rules, improve punctuation, and practice constructing error-free complex sentences.
