Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—accepting difficult circumstances versus trying to improve them—and provides an opinion in the conclusion. However, the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. For example, the argument about students facing difficulties leaving a job due to debt is introduced but lacks sufficient extension or specific examples. The writer's position is discernible, particularly in the introduction and conclusion, but the overall development of arguments lacks the depth required to reach a higher band. While the prompt is addressed, the explanations tend to be repetitive and rely on general statements rather than fully explored consequences.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays an overall coherent arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the differing views. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, with transitional phrases like 'To begin with', 'In-depth', and 'Conversely' used rather rigidly. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'when someone identifies that the place is not suitable for them... they started to working on it', where pronoun reference and logical progression between clauses become blurred, preventing a smoother flow of ideas throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to communicate the basic arguments. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'conventional backgrounds', 'employement', and 'schools of thought', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling. Phrases like 'an unwilling job', 'in stuck', and 'buisnesses' reflect lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips. Furthermore, idioms or metaphors like 'get out of the frog well' are awkward and strained, indicating that while the writer tries to incorporate varied vocabulary, the lack of precision causes some difficulty and distraction for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use subordination and relative clauses, such as in 'Many students who came from conventional backgrounds face difficulties...'. However, attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, containing errors in verb forms, prepositions within grammatical patterns, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'a person should have to be try better' and 'its depend on the circumstances they facing'. Frequent errors in articles and plurals are also present. These grammatical lapses require the reader to decode the meaning occasionally, placing it firmly within the criteria for this level.
