Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on how to handle difficult situations and providing a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the first view is supported by reasons related to work experience and networking, the explanation remains somewhat generalized. The second view is also presented with arguments about promotion and quality of work, but the ideas are limited and under-developed, particularly in the examples provided, such as citing a vague podcast reference without sufficient elaboration. To move to a higher band, the student needs to extend and support all main ideas with more fully explained examples and deeper analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a concluding stance. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas logically. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and repetitive, relying heavily on basic connective words like 'Furthermore' and 'Moreover' to link sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'they believes' where the antecedent is broad. To achieve a higher level, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother, more natural transitions between paragraphs without overusing formulaic transition markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing a minimally sufficient range to communicate the main points. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'inadequate job', 'budget shortfall', and 'purposeful life', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice and word formation, such as 'beliefs' instead of 'believe' or 'achieveing'. There are also minor spelling and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'eastablishing'. Although these issues do not seriously impede overall communication, they restrict the vocabulary score. Incorporating more precise terminology and improving word forms will help elevate the lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses. However, there is a limited overall range of accurate complex structures. Frequent errors in grammar appear, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'the commentators of first group believes' and 'budget shortfall made us learn', as well as missing or incorrect articles ('a opportunity'). Punctuation errors are also present, such as spacing issues and missing commas. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to weigh down the accuracy score. Greater control over basic agreements and verb forms is needed.
