IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people opine that in certain situations like unsatisfactory work or lower pay, it will be beneficial to accept these situations while others postulate it is better to improve yourself to get out of these situations. This essay intends to analyze both perspectives, I however, side with the latter view.
Unnecessary stress can lead to depression. When a person is not able to get what they wanted like a stable income and a comfortable home, there are chances that he/she may get stressed, which in worse case can leads to self-harm. Not everyone is born in privilaged households, where the person is not in any financial burden and is considerably well fed and looked after. A large proportion of population in developing countries is hard working but in spite of the efforts another person with half the effort can earn considerably more if they are born in a developed country. In this scenario it is difficult to blame ourselves, and a goop opiton would be to accept the circumstances as it is.
Hard work is key to success. In contrary to popular belief that rich get richer and poor get poorer, there are several examples of a person coming from the humble background, who with their determination and dedication can get successfull in life. A case in point is Dhirubhai Ambani, who first started their business with simple soaps and washing powders but gradually with years of sweat and tears he established the Ambani group, evaluated at more than 100 Billion US dollars. Therefore, it suggested that the person should be always proactive to solve the problems.
In my opinion, success is not dependent on luck or destiny. Whether with bad worplace enviornment or low income, persistant hard work will help you find the new job with better prospects. Furthermore, by accepting the bad situation, you are not displaying your full capabilities. A better attitude and desire to improve will help the person to get out of current predicaments.
To conclude, a person who starts to accept the situations as it is will always be less successfull than who challenges and works hard to overcome those problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on accepting or fighting bad situations and clearly presents a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant, but some are more fully developed than others, moving beyond a Band 5 level into the higher band territory. For instance, the discussion on socio-economic backgrounds and systemic inequality is introduced in the second body paragraph, but its link to the overall thesis is slightly under-developed and abruptly concluded with the suggestion to accept circumstances. Meanwhile, the counter-argument regarding hard work and Dhirubhai Ambani is extended with a specific, supportive example, showing clear glimmers of the next band where ideas are more thoroughly supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from discussing acceptance, to advocating hard work, and finally stating a personal stance. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments, with a dedicated introduction and conclusion. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition in the third paragraph starting with "In contrary to popular belief" contains a slight referencing and prepositional inaccuracy. Pronoun referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous shift between singular and plural pronouns when discussing individuals and populations in the second paragraph. This places the response firmly within the band for logical organisation with some mechanical cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's ideas. The student attempts less common lexical items such as 'postulate', 'predicaments', and 'proactive', demonstrating a vocabulary range sufficient to meet the requirements of the lower band while reaching towards higher flexibility. However, there are some word-choice errors and spelling mistakes that do not impede communication, such as 'privilaged', 'goop opiton', 'worplace enviornment', and 'persistant'. Collocations are occasionally unnatural, such as 'evaluated at more than 100 Billion', which prevents the lexical score from rising further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the essay, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses, such as conditional and relative structures. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'which in worse case can leads to' and minor punctuation lapses, but these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the meaning. The control over basic structures is solid, and the attempts at complex sentences show the variety expected at this level, though occasional slip-ups prevent a higher rating.
